Just posting up here in case anyone has some secret hints, tips, phone numbers, etc...

My son flew out to Ibiza last night, but apparently his suitcase didn't. He's wearing just some old scruffy clothes to travel in, and he went on his own so he doesn't have mates with him to scrounge spare clothes from. He flew Easyjet from LGW > IBZ. Seems that everyone is passing the buck elsewhere and nobody can or will help. I'm sure they deal with dozens of last baggage events every day but it's different when you're on the receiving end.

Between us we've tried:

- Lost baggage booth at IBZ - they gave him a ticket and said they couldn't see his bag on the system but would call him if it turned up
- Easyjet staff at IBZ - apparently no help whatsoever
- Gatwick - they don't want to know and just refer you to your airline (but surely the baggage handling is run by LGW, albeit subcontracted?)
- Easyjet in the UK, they just refer you to a claims website, all very well but that doesn't help in the here and now

He does have travel insurance but I guess we need to be certain it won't turn up before notifying them.

Can't say this has ever happened to me before. One EZY flight has landed at IBZ since he got there but the bag wasn't on it.

Is there anything else we can do? The next EZY flight from LGW to IBZ lands at 0100 tomorrow morning, I guess there's the outside chance it'll be on that?

Ta.

I haven't had luggage lost by EasyJet (as I never fly with them), but as a regular with many other airlines I'm unfortunately no stranger to lost luggage...and that includes BA (too many times to remember), United/Continental and Delta. Although I always try to travel with just hand luggage, there are times when unfortunately stuff has to go in the hold. But even then I always have at least a change of clothing and everything I need for the first few days in hand luggage. No help to your son though I know.

The good news is that everything that's ever been lost has eventually turned up - usually 2-3 days later; only once did it turn up next day. And that goes for most of the other regular travelers I know - the lost stuff does eventually turn up (10 days later is the longest), albeit no direct experience of EasyJet.

There should be a lost/delayed bags tracking procedure - if that's via the web site for EasyJet then so be it - but every time I've had issues you initiate the procedure at the airport. There should be a form where you describe the bag (usually with reference to a chart of bag types), give them your forwarding address etc. The bag should be delivered to you when they track it down. You must get the case/tracking reference (this isn't the baggage ticket reference, but the reference for the claim. If this has been done, then all you can really do is wait. If not, then get with the programme and get a tracking/case reference for the bag - there are no shortcuts, the number of lost/delayed bags at any one time is huge and while it seems real important to whoever has lost the bag (I know!), in reality you are one of thousands in the system so you just have to wait for things to take their course unfortunately - presuming you are 'in the system'.

What won't happen is the bag just appears at the destination airport 'unannounced'. At the point it gets on the plane to its destination it will be in the system, so if there is no record of it on the next flight then it simply isn't on it. Lots of the airlines offer on-line tracking of the claim once you have the tracking reference. Experience suggests for the first day or two the bag is just 'lost'. Then it shows on a flight to you (holiday or home destination) so you know they've found it. Then typically another 'black hole' between saying its arrived and getting it delivered to you.

rofl

The most I've ever been offered (and that was from BA) was a wee bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, comb etc. - just the 'regular' club world wash kit thingy. I can't see anyone giving out cash, although clearly one's own cash spent may be recovered off insurance depending on the policy. But even then there will be limits and conditions.

Thanks for that. Like you, I always opt for hand luggage wherever possible, and only resort to hold for things like ski/enduro where you need loads of kit.

Interesting the point about it usually taking a few days - we were quietly hoping it would be on tonight's flight. He's pretty hyper about it just now but the Easyjet office opens again at 1430 so he an calm down a little until then and then speak to them again. I've logged it with the airline baggage claim site, will have to get onto his insurers as well.
