Ok we've all been reading about beemers & audis being stolen off people's drives without keys (other makes are available).

So what would you do (to make vehicles more secure) if you were the EU master of legislation? Here's my idea. May need some technical work biggrin

Manufacturers to be forced to provide a tracker aerial (min surface area to be determined) into a metal strip that is hard to remove; (eg is part of the windscreen surround, or roof rails or something) so the tracker itself can be placed anywhere, and the aerial is non-removable (within reason). The aerial itself does not indicate whether the vehicle actually has a tracker fitted since every model will have one, thus making thieves lives much more difficult.

Middle Eastern practice of chopping off hands of thieves. If they still steal a car then they're a clever dick and can have it. biggrin

Introduce some sort of password protection on OBD connectors. Perhaps something where it has to be enabled by phoning up, getting a pin number.

Or something simple like locking the connector inside a robust compartment, wired to the alarm, or secure enough that you'd have to make a lot of noise/take a lot of time/climb into the car to force it open.

Nothing will be foolproof though.

Legalise the car anti theft in the advert seen on Robocop 2 wink

I think the car manufacturers need to start understanding computer security - because most new cars are becoming a computer with an engine and wheels (trouble is most IT companies struggle with IT security)

that's quite a good idea - like those little usb-type pen things IT network people use? Like bank things. They keep clicking round and there's some way of using the right code at a certain point in time, I think. IT people will know what I'm on about.

Punish car thieves so severely they would prefer to have their liberty longterm/limbs/a life afterwards.

I'd have shot some who trespassed in my land when I lived in the US, shame I can't do the same now.

<geekmoment>

It's called 2 factor authentication and requires something you know (password) and something you have (token with revolving pin)

Clifford Blackjax or similar.

Allow owners with trackers to remotely immobilize the car rather than just pathetically watching it disappear

Simple
Fit a spark plug into the fuel tank and then:

Low tech
switch one of the real HT leads from under the bonnet to the fuel tank spark plug when you exit the car

High tech
enable the switch remotely by GPS or some other witch craft and then choose when to press the button

High tech approach possibly enhanced by having some kind of CCTV in the car live linked to youtube

Probably..................

They're nicking cars by re-coding a key and just driving off! Pin entry would stop that. Very few tea leaves will enter the house imho, they'll just fk off somewhere easier.

How about a device which locks the front seatback in the fully forward position - meaning a thief can't even sit in the car to drive it?

if a thief wants a car bad enough, they will get it regardless. I used to remove my kinglead, but now, i just leave it at the mercy of them. If they want it, they can take it. Better that than have someone come into my house for the keys. (the reason i also leave my keys near the front door) they are out of sight from the front door but easily seen if inside my house. Again, rather that than my family hurt.
