Hi all. First post so be nice lol. Also not a proper mechanic but more than willing to get stuck in and learn so be extra nice!

Having some problems with a Perkins engine in a JCB forklift, LD4 type, approx. 30 years old.

Was overheating and pressuring the cooling system. Went all out on it, new radiator, new hoses, new water pump, took the head off, got it skimmed and pressure tested. Refitted the head along with a new gasket, torqued to 85 nm, ran for an hour and retorqued as per workshop manual as well as resetting valve clearances. Still having the same problem with the engine. My mate says tighten the head down more and it'll be fine but I'd rather have a second opinion. Is it possible there's a crack in the block between the combustion chamber and waterway? And if so, how do I test this? Before I put the head back on, I did a visual inspection of the block and couldn't see anything obviously wrong.

What's it doing that makes you think it is pressurising the cooling system?

There's an awful horrible smell of antifreeze when then engine gets warm, and if I loosen the cap on the header tank, the water sprays a foot in the air.

You could pressure test the cooling system or carry out a sniff test to narrow down the cause.
Are you sure the radiator is not blocked or that there is not an airlock in the system?

Is the thermostat working correctly, is it in the right way round?

Does coolant blow from the cap/overflow whilst it is running or boil up as soon as it is switched off, any engine will blow coolant out if you loosen the cap when it is at working temperature.

Cooling systems are supposed to be pressurised, and taking the cap off when hot will always release a lot of water.

Has the thermostat been checked / changed?
