Just seen that (the author) Tom Clancy has died:

I loved his early books, but I didn't enjoy his later ones.... Rest in peace man.

That was the sum of all fears.

Too young, RIP.

His books are what got me into reading. I played Rainbow Six on PS2, spotted the book and bought it... now have the full set up to date (including the ones written with/by Greaney, Blackwood and Telep) + the Splinter Cell series.

I'm currently working my way through Lee Childs Jack Reacher series whilst waiting for Tom Clancy's 'Command Authority'... will that still be published?

RIP Mr C

I never read his books, but I fking loved Splinter Cell. Not sure how much involvement he had in that, but his name was on the covers.

Thanks, and RIP.

Loved his books.

It's quite amusing to see how many people (younger people, mainly) who know him for the various video games emblazoned with his name rather than his literary works.

I've enjoyed them, but that's over egging things a bit!

Guilty.

I've read one similar type of book (perceived, of course). I'll get round to reading his works eventually.

Amusing and somewhat depressing.

RIP Tom.

Sad news for his family but I thought the one and a half books of his that I read were bloody awful. I gave up on the second one when the America fk Yeah! stuff just became unbearable.

That's a pity, I've also read virtually all of his books (except the Op Centre ones that were not to my taste). Other than a big howler in Rainbow Six I've enjoyed them all.

I understand what you mean about the "Team USA World Police" style of writing. IMO that was less pronounced in the earlier books -The Hunt for Red October through to "Cardinal of the Kremlin". It might have benn 9/11 which resulted in the more "patriotic" style of writing.

Which book did you read?

It all went 'world police' because his books are in chronological order...

When the cold war ended he had to find a new baddy, to keep it reasonably in keeping with modern politics and the current world view (fiction needs some basis in reality to be believable) China and the Middle East were the obvious choices...

This coincided with when the real US government decided to go all 'World Police' and take on the 'Terrorists' who happen to be the government in Afghanistan at the time...

Although I'm NOT savvy on world politics so I could be very wrong.
