Quite possibly , mines in a scirocco r so after 3 rd in auto mode the up shifts drop the engine below ideal revs for boost to liven up the engine. Changing up at 1800rpm probably is perfect in a diesel, but not a k04 turbo petrol.
In 'D' mode the box will shift up as early as it possibly can (unless you are giving it some beans). Hence, around town I'm in 6th gear at an indicated 37mph. Presumably the reason is to extract maximum fuel economy.

If you want best performance, put it into 'S' mode and it will change gear to keep the revs in the power band at any given speed. Not ideal for pootering around in an urban environment though and not particularly economical.

Horses for courses. I find 'D' mode is fine most of the time, especially as you can always use the paddles to drop it down a few gears to prepare for an overtake or fast corner. 'S' mode is great for quick driving on country roads.

You could be right but won't the problem then also show itself when moving forward?
Seems to be much more prone to happening in reverse (maybe because you are 'going against the grain'?).

I'm always amazed at how quick the discs can be to pick up a thin layer of rust.

From your profile it looks like you have a k03 tt, The on off boost compare is much less (I used to have a gti). Than in the k04. Vw should really remap the shift points for the k04 cars. S mode is too extreme the other way, I don't want to be pushing revs just in daily use. Manual mode is best for me, I can make rapid progress with less than 4.5k revs. Also I disagree that the d mode gives best economy, my long term average over 7k miles now is 31mpg, using auto mode my experience is that being off boost then back on, then off wastes fuel. Better to just keep it in the low end of the on boost zone.

OK, getting concerned now!

I've just bought a 50K miles 1.8 Passat cc 170 PS DSG Auto that is 5 years old in Feb 2015.

It has been serviced regularly, had the Oil and Filter changed in the gearbox at 40K miles and has just started to judder on occasional pull away (normally going from 1st to 2nd when driving slowly).

Annoyed I didn't research this DSG issue prior to buying the car and wonder if I might have any recourse with VW if this is as inherent an issue as I am starting to discover.

I ubnderstand the US and Australia have had warranty on their DSG systems extended.

Don't really fancy paying out £1000's to fix a fault that was built into the car from new!

Oh dear, sounds like a clutch pack maybe... have you checked with your local dealer to see if it needed a recall?

Funnily enough, we went to a different VW dealership to look at another car on the forecourt, but that had been sold.

We were chatting to the salesman there and he looked up the reg of the car I bought privately and said it had been serviced regularly and had had the gearbox oil and filter change done under warranty in Feb 14.

I am reticent to take it to VW and be hit with big bills for running diagnostics (about £60 IIRC) and then start throwing parts at it on a trial and error basis (again I've heard that swapping out expensive mechatronic units has not always been the solution).

I'm tempted to take it to a DSG refurbish specialist (there's one in Kent that seems to know all about these units) which will cost £1K ish!!!!

There is a note on the service history when it went for its gearbox oil change where the owner asked them to look at an intermittent juddering and they came back with 'No fault found'.

I had to look that up. It came back as 'hooray for boobies'.

I have to say that I totally agree but I dont get the relevance here.

I wouldn't get too wound up just yet, it might just need a clutch adaption, but either way assuming it has a full vw history i would take it to them, if it needs work start to push for a contribution to repairs from vw given it's stilllowish mileage and only just out of warranty

My R32 is on an 06 plate and 51k miles. The DSG box is utterly perfect. Dont know if they've sorted the slight delay between coming off the break pedal and drive - that would be my only complaint about it.

Saying that though mine will probably go bang tomorrow lol

Was serviced 2 years ago on 37k but will have it done at the next service just incase.
I collect an 09 R32 on Saturday and noticed this too. First DSG box so fingers crossed
