Local newspaper (Examiner) article.

The new M62 "managed motorway" cameras are, apparently, live all the time. The article, when read closely, actually says the cameras are live all the time and "CAN" be used for enforcement even when the signs are blank. So, are they or aren't they ticketing? Who's to know whilst the authorities are being deliberately obtuse/misleading/dishonest/scummy*

Until there's a definitive answer, I'll be assuming the temptation will be too great for the scamerati. Articles like this will simply lead to the sheeple assuming the worst and dragging the maximum speed attainable at any time down to 60! Thus adding to traffic congestion. No doubt this will then be used to extend the operating times of the "managed motorway". It's a self fulfilling prophecy for the marxist "won't someone think of the children" brigade - I'm looking at you, Mary.

I await the stock "obey ze limit and you vill haf no problems" retorts. To which I'll say: there were far more accidents per week on this section of M62 with a fifty limit (avg speed cameras) than there were when the traffic was allowed to flow freely! In other words, a blanket enforcement of the rules, however stupid the rule, lead to more accidents and expensive motorway closures.

My understanding is that all Motorway speed cameras are now approved and able to enforce NSL as well as the 'reduced' limits during motorway management.

I'm sure the time is not far off when the 'authorities' press the button to make them active for NSL, as I'm fairly sure that they haven't been used as such up to now. Any non-anecdotal evidence to the contrary?

Nothing firm but I am sure that there are people who have posted on here about being zapped on the M25 at 80+ when it has been NSL.

I always assume that any camera I pass is live unless it is a little black ball of rusting soot or has a big orange bag over it.

This has served me well considering the Dartford piss take where they stuck up the AvCams, then put up "Not in Use" signs for something like a year which, when they went live, they changed to identical signs in the same locations read in "Now in Use".

In summary anything to do with speed cameras always involves a cunning stunt somewhere.

Other than the Dartford crossing bit, as far as I know, none of the M25 gantry cameras are live re the 70mph limit. I've been through them myself at +80ish, and I've seen some at +Mach1 get away with it. But one day........................!!!!!

haha.

Interesting as i am sure i have seen posts on here about tickets from this but they must have been people who had been 'flashed' as i have certianly seen people flashed on there who would have earnt a letter for their trouble if it had been working!

I was not amused. But then it never troubled me as I always make extra sure that I stick to the limit there as there are, for once, very good reasons for it much of the time and it looks like a prime target area with losts of places to pull people over for a chat, etc.

PGPSW has the same article on it's home page. They're quite a respectable bunch and usually de-bunk any hype.

I'm told by the powers that be, that they will be live all the time in the new "All lanes running" sections that are going to be build in the NW.
I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the ones on the M62, and the ones lower down on the M1 new bit are already live, but I can't confirm it either way.

They're not (up to 1 lepton at least). We had this topic of discussion in this very forum only last week.

Just out of interest if the profiles are honest wink would you believe a desert company director or someone working in a HA control room who probably reads the intranet updates ?

Is that a director whose company deals in hot sand or puddings? smile

Presumably reports of cameras being permanently live are just scare tactics, and quite different from the data generating actual tickets?

Sorry for digging this thread up. Was heading back to Leeds last night when I spotted a car heading in the other direction that was seemingly caught by one of the variable speed limit cameras as it flashed. Only thing is the displays were definitely switched off at the time.

I was under the impression that the cameras are off when the displays are blank, is this not the case?

Yep - I saw three on Saturday - all stuff coming westbound. One in between the M606 and Harthead Moor services and two lanes (same gantry) near Ikea (M621 jct). Displays were off. I see this fairly often, always these same two gantries too.

Personally I stick to an indicated 80 or less when they're off. Not worth 3 points.

There's another thread somewhere (I think in the Yorkshire forum) where this was discussed, and the general consensus there was that, although they may flash when they are 'blank', nobody who has been flashed in these circumstances to date has actually ever received a ticket.

Someone posted up that a "family member" got a ticket, but as usual, was unable to provide any documentary evidence of this.

Also the wording of the statement from HA / Police says that they "CAN" be used at all times, not that they "ARE" used at all times.... ;-)

Although it's still probably not worth going past at many leptons above 70, in case they actually do decide to use them.....

Two months ago I went through those 'quickly'- saw loads of flashes on the othe carriageway too. Not a Dickibird.

I would NOT mess with the M60 one though. Official data says av.460 caught a month
They were flashing away westbound at the gantry at bottom of dip between M621 and M606 last night around 8pm. No temp limit set and the cars in lane 2 and 3 were only doing 70 by my rough visual calculations from driving my 56mph truck. Basically the cameras are fked!
