In a week or so's time, I'm flying to italy do drive an old mini back to blighty....further info here if interested: http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Quick question about insurance: from memory, once a car is insured in Italy, any driver with the owners permission can drive it I seem to remember. The car is on italian plates, my sis has confirmed that i and my friend will be covered for the drive to the UK . However, technically I'm buying the car from her and obviously once we do the paperwork it's formalised, can anyone confirm if at that point her insurance is still valid for me? Or will cover cease when she is no longer the owner/keeper? Will I need to organise insurance to be able to drive it back? Or could we just delay the paperwork until we get back home and avoid potential probs?

Any info much appreciated

Hi,

as long as the car is on Italian plates and insured you will not have any issue, so I'd advise you to do any paperwork after your arrival in the UK.

Just one thing to remember: you (or your sister) will have to hand back the plates and the relevant documents (Libretto di circolazione and Certificato di proprietà) to the Italian authorities -ACI or Motorizzazione-, otherwise they will not cancel it from the registry and your sister will have to pay the tax on it -or be liable if she doesn't-.

Great info, thanks smile Looks like I'll be sending the plates/docs back from the UK via parcel force or similar when I get back smile
