Sorry to crash this thread, I've been introduced to Sonos today and want to set up throughout my flat. Any downsides to the system? Richer sounds are quoting £164 per play 1 (I need five) and £579 for a play bar- does this sound reasonable? Many thanks.
Are Richer sounds the cheapest place to get one? I've just got back from the USA where Play 1s were $200 (about £130 after tax) but I'd need a UK power lead so I didn't bother getting one.

I have a play 1 from the states - I just snipped the wire and changed the plug !

Or you can just pick up an adaptor for a couple of quid if you prefer (personally I hate fiddly adaptors hence why I went through the effort of snipping the wire).

If you can't justify the flight to the states then VEX on here can do better than Richer Sounds I believe?

And he is classier to deal with (and I say that in spite of the fact I love Richer Sounds and have bought hi fi gear from them many a time in the past)!

Hi all, I've been looking at a Sonos system for my house, but need a little advice please!

We've just had a single storey extension built, with a vaulted ceiling. The original plan was a Denon Ceol Piccolo unit, hard wired to 2 pairs of speakers in the ceiling. Then someone introduced me to Sonos, which looks great.

So, current plan is to keep 2 pairs of speakers in the ceiling, hard wired to a Sonos Connect Amp, and a Play:1 in the kitchen, and (budget permitting) a Play:3 for the lounge, with a view to adding more Play units in other rooms in the future.

So, first question is will the Connect Amp be OK to power the 2 pairs of ceiling speakers? Or do I need a Connect and a separate amp?

I also need some recommendations for ceiling speakers (budget around £80-100 per pair.

For reference the extension is around 30 feet long, and will be open plan into the kitchen, making an L-shaped kitchen/family room.

I hope that all makes sense! Any advice or suggestions very welcome!

Sorry to all, stupidly busy, 12hour days and a collapse when I do get home.

Will try to reply to everyone this weekend, along with starting my vat return with only a day or to left to submit!

Opps.

Latest update means that there's now an option to connect without using a bridge or wiring the first zone to the router..

Loving my sonos system, apart from occasional connectivity drops.

Still doing battle with the Playbar and 5.1 ( although to be fair it rocks out stereo movie soundtracks to almost surround sound standards )

Managing to pass through my Sony TV, 5.1 from my Tivo box, and newly purchased Sony blue ray player, but still only stereo from my Mac Mini and Playstation 3.

Absolutely no idea how to get 5.1 from the latter 2.

With this new software update, they can now work without a bridge. Does this only work with new kit or can I get my old Play 3 hooked up this way?

The cynic in me suggests that the software update will mean many will try running their Sonos systems via WiFi, then find their WiFi bandwidth doesn't cut it. . . . . Oh look, Sonos are releasing the Sonos Boost in October!! How timely.

Updated my Play 1 today and it joined the wifi network.

Does anyone know if it still uses the Sonos bridge if that provides a better signal?

Result! I've been putting off buying a sonos until I could be bothered to run some cat5 because I didn't want to buy the bridge only to ditch it when I eventually run the cable.
Richer sounds are offering a free set of speakers with the sonos amp, not really a discount but might be able to sell them on to recoup some cash if they're not needed.

I don't like this idea.

The whole advantage of Sonos for me as an installer is that Sonos sits on its own wifi not eating great hunks of data capacity out of your existing wifi network.

The bridge is still going to be available for the time being, and I will be using it on all installs that need it. Don't get hung up on this, you can still just plug in any Sonos devise onto the network and it will provide access to the whole of the rest of the sonos network.

It is just away of selling more boxes, simplifying the set up process so they can sell more boxes.

The detail says if you have a 5.1 setup they recommend you still use a bridge - or buy the forthcoming "Booster"...

I have one device hard-wired into a switch (which then goes down to the router). The Sonos network is much more reliable than my Virgin wi-fi router!
