Looking to get away either easter or summer 2014, max budget of about £3000, must be somewhere sunny. Not a Greek island.

2 adults 2 kids 2 weeks.

Suggestions welcome?

In addition to the questions above, what do you like to do?

I'd head for the Alps somewhere, but then I prefer mountains and active holidays to beaches and lazy holidays.

This.

I have always loved Croatia - good weather, cheap drink, good (cheap) food and accommodation.

We are planing our next trip back, we drive (so we can have City breaks/see things on the way there and back) but you can get flights out very cheaply (Wizz/Easyject/Ryanair).

I'd advise:

Pisa: less than a day needed to see the three main sites (Pisa is a bit of a dump otherwise)

Florence: loads to see and do along with a million other visitors! Can do 3/4 main sites in a day otherwise you'll need to plan for several days.

Lucca: between Pisa and Florence and well worth a visit for a day or two. If you do, I strongly recommend leaving your car outside the city walls: driving inside and finding you way out is an absolute nightmare (see Top Gear's visity several years ago).

Re Croatia, had my first visit in May 2013. Flew into Pula, was based at Porec, hired a car and explored the Istrian peninsula, excellent holiday for the week, and not overly pricey.

Sorry to take this OT.

Thanks for this, much appreciated - I've heard the same about Pisa so was planning to stay in Florence for 3 nights and do it as a day trip - stopping by Modena & museums etc on the way from Zadar?

I'll check out Lucca - can this be done on the same day as Pisa? and will be sure to leave the car outside. Just fretting over the fuel bill, think it'll be a decent chunk more in the new 540i over the old EP3....darn sight more comfortable though!

Seeing as your having a few days in Florence you could have a longer break from driving by using the train from Florence one day and then Lucca the next. Both are maybe 1 1/2 hours from Florence. This will give you plenty of time in Pisa to get to and explore the Piazza dei Miracoli. One day in Lucca will let you get the flavour of the place and probably see the principle sites, especially with a bit of planning ahead.

I was in Lucca last month for four days, spent one of those days in Florence (nowhere near enough time!). Lucca is a lovely walled town with good squares and nice narrow streets to explore (ie get lost in!). It's a disater with a car, though. The station is just outside the walls and maybe it's a 15 minute walk into central Lucca.
