Stupid not story imo. Now 'Kick it out' have joined in - http://www.kickitout.org/news.php/news_id/6083
I'm generally supportive of KIO but not on this one.

What I’m slightly concerned about as a side issue is the fact the story was leaked. Someone in the England camp (either player or staff) can’t be trusted, if there was a real problem then it should be raised with managamnet, not straight on the phone to The Sun, that is not good leading up to a world cup.
Heard the reported on the radio this morning, he was Scottish and absolutely loving it!

Here’s the joke in full:
“NASA decided they’d finally send a man up in a capsule after sending only monkeys in the earlier missions.
“They fire the man and the monkey into space.
“The intercom crackles, ‘Monkey, fire the retros.’
“A little later, ‘Monkey, check the solid fuel supply.’
“Later still, “Monkey, check the life support systems for the man.’
“The astronaut takes umbrage and radios NASA, ‘When do I get to do something?’
“NASA replies, ‘In 15 minutes – feed the monkey.’”
The 'monkey' Roy was referring to was Andros Townsend.
When you see the 'joke' in its entirety, you can see that it is totally harmless. Why the fk would Hodgson who comes across as a well cultured and traveled man be racist?
Absolutely ridiculous!

Journalist was on the radio this morning confirmed it was direct call to him from a player.
Mental isn't it? Player, if so offended, should be bold enough to put his name to the complaint.
More like player too stupid to understand the context of the joke. Mental isn't it? Player, if so offended, should be bold enough to put his name to the complaint.
And below is the response from the player himself.

This joke is eveidently so racist that its been printed in its entirety.
The rumour on Twitter is that Frank Lampard Jnr is the source.
Really cannot believe it's Lampard , he's been around far too long to go running to a journo with a nothing story. The rumour on Twitter is that Frank Lampard Jnr is the source.
One of the well respected blogs i read suggest it's Danny Welbeck.

The only surprise in the story so far is that the blethering idiot Peter Herbert hasn't dived headlong into the row shouting that Roy should be sacked.
I was about to post the same thing!Total none story, Towensend came out and "no offence given, none taken" Rooney even jumped to the Managers' defence!
KIO, who are normally a force for good, are painting themselves in Idiot Gloss.
That said, the changing room is normally a sacred place...so who leaked the story?
The player who was "insulted" and told the press should be named and told in no uncertain terms that he is a cretin of the first order.
It is the journalists who are the racists. Implying racism where none was intended. It is they who are equating Townshend with a monkey in racist terms. The manager certainly did not and Townsend wasn't the least bit bothered.
Patrick Barclay, of the Evening Standard, puts it perfectly for me.

Did an England player truly take offence at Roy Hodgson’s telling of the NASA monkey joke? If so, the fool should be named and shamed and asked to substitute his own apology for the one the England manager felt obliged to issue after a racial connotation was allegedly discerned in his half-time talk during the victory over Poland.
At the same time, as someone who has long worked in the media, I must confess to misgivings about the story’s vivid circulation, even if it is true. There is a time for good taste and, in this case, the notion presumably underpinning publication – that Andros Townsend could be confused, however jocularly, with a monkey - itself constitutes racism of the most profoundly offensive kind.
Beside this, the insult done to Hodgson pales. But he had no need to apologise, any more than Adrian Chiles had – though the ITV presenter also did – for making a pre-match quip about Polish supporters and the home-refurbishment industry.
Once again, the fuss implicitly slighted only Poles and builders and left me wondering if there is any such thing as an innocuous joke in these increasingly ridiculous times. To paraphrase Stan Collymore’s scornful reaction to the Hodgson story, it’s getting to the stage where ethnic over-sensitivity is the bigot’s best friend.
Knowing Hodgson, I doubt if this civilised man will lose too much sleep – or reading time - over it. And I hope he will not feel too constrained in his future choice of metaphor. He is bound, however, to be more acutely aware of the special treatment England accords its football managers.
We work on the assumption that winning affords some protection – only when Glenn Hoddle went through a dodgy spell were his supposed views on reincarnation deemed relevant – and most people will accordingly see the Hodgson episode for the nonsense it is. How helpful it would be if a wider message struck home.

As far as i am aware, black people do NOT look like monkeys.
If someone was offended by that joke in a racial fashion or the press think it is a huge story, then i would suggest they think differently about the monkey resemblance.
They should be looking at themselves and how their minds work.
Not hodgson who did nothing wrong.

As I said before I’m more concerned about what’s going on in the dressing room! How can anyone trust a team mate that at the first sign of anything controversial bypasses the managerial system and goes straight to the press.
Until we find out who was “offended” (assuming it’s a player) all of the black players are under suspicion. The person who went to the press should be man enough come out, stand by what he believes in and answer why he was offended and at the same time alleviate the suspicion of his team mates.
Let’s, for arguments sake, say it was Welbeck that was offended. If it was me in charge of either the club or country I would have serious fears about having him in the changing room. How can any manager / team mate ever trust him again? I feel his position is completely untenable and if I was Moyes / Hodgson I would feel very nervous around him. The same would apply to any player regardless of team.
If Hodgson had said, “pass it to the (insert you own racist term here) on the wing” then it would be difficult to defend him but things like this take away from the real problem of racism.
