Was the 987 Spyder really that bespoke, I thought it was only the rear lid and a small tweak to the front that was different from the standard car on the looks front ??
IMO The 981 Spyder is far more bespoke than my current 987 Spyder with its extra 15bhp plus all the fantastic other mods over a 987 S. Fast forward to the Gen 2 version and Porsche have given it the classic Spyder look and now an even better power upgrade with superb soundtrack to match cool

come on be real, it looks like a GTS, the roof is a backward step as you cannot take it out the car and cannot open the boot with it up !
It is less sexy so imo will date a bit more than the older design, the plastic parts esp the bit which ruin the humps are cheap.

It's a great car as the GTS is a great car, but it's a GTS with a crap roof and a 3.8.

A nicer car would have been the GTS with the 3.8 ! imo of course :-)

Lol we seem to have been here before......hehe

The 981 Spyder looks no more like a GTS than the GT4 looks like a GTS Cayman.

It may be slightly inconvenient re the rear boot......so use the front then! The roof quality will be light years ahead of the tent.

As for looks......entirely subjective but most confirm and imo it is a vast improvement on the old model....inside and out.

Interesting to hear the Spyder and GT4 in that short long Goodwood clip posted this morning....they both sounded great and probably the best especially having regard to the other cars doing the run.

It has been said the car adds up to more than the sum of its parts, but when you look at the changes made to make the 987 Spyder, it would've taken time and effort to achieve the changes. The key thing is that you simply couldn't take a boxster and retrofit parts and turn it into a Spyder, moving it away from simply an options/parts special.

- Unique aluminum rear boot lid (transforming look)
- Removable lightweight roof
- Slight power increase
- Front bumper, side intake design changes
- Suspension/damper setting changes
- LSD
- Reprofiled side windows
- GT3 RS doors and inner card
- Interior design changes (speedo, painted trim)
- Carbon buckets
- Lighter, Spyder wheels

On top of that it's benefited from relative rarity, good driving reviews, enthusiast focus.

Just to add.. I can't wait to properly see the new Spyder. It obviously carries the same theme as the original but they have tried to make it a bit more rounded in terms of people being comfortable with the roof. The bigger engine has altered it's positioning a bit now and certainly the new price has taken a leap. No point really arguing over what looks best, everyone has different taste.

We don't really know how much different the car is from the GTS to drive. For example it may steer a little different to a GTS if the marketing book is correct.

To say that the roof is a step back though on this spyder is hard to argue?! I passed on the last spyder because of the roof. The rear boot issue is certainly a small inconvenience, but I bet most people would prefer this roof to the old roof.

Porsche clearly listened to the customer feedback when making the roof.

If it's anywhere between the GTS and GT4 to drive I think it will be an incredible car.

The GT4 does look a bit more motorsport than the GTS imo vs a 981 Spyder over the GTS

The 987.2 Spyder roof is a work or art esp the clean lines inside and it's all Carbon and no metal. the 981 SPyder roof looks like a 1971 MBG and is all iron inside.
I also love the 2 part design as I drive it a bit with the rear section out which is great.
So while the 981 might be more usable (if you omit you cannot open the rear) the quality as you state is no where near the Carbon master piece of the old one.

Looks as you say subjective, no point talking about looks, only facts.

then spec, again the GT4 is all GT3 spec and parts for the sus, the 981 Spyder is all GTS sus.

The GTS is a great car So I am not knocking the 981 Spyder, but to me it's very GTS with a 1970's roof but that 3.8 every one wants so will buy it.

And last the inside you think is a better, not in Spyder name imo as a Spyder should be a stripped out lightweight design. (did you see the org)

would the car be better in GTS form and the 3.8 yes imo it would have been a better car than the car they are releasing.

For a classic 3rd use summer car the 987.2 Spyder has it licked by miles, it just has that "wow people pointing factor" I find.

I understand the exposed internal roof frame is for the pre production cars only.

I seem to remember reading Porsche's press release which said that the Spyder has a single skinned roof (which is what the Mayfair sapphire blue car had) ..

Sounds like this car is the total opposite to a 3.8L GTS if you go by the people who designed and made it of course cool

Thanks.
I was left wondering though if this guy had actually driven the car, or just made something up from the brochure and press release info.

! made it more GTS when I watched it lol a token 6kg weight saving over a GTS(with buckets) if you omit the roof !

to quote the driven review NONE OF MY WORDS REMEMBER !!! so don't shoot me :-)

"In contrast, the Spyder merely tweaks the underlying whole of the Boxster GTS"

"The chassis, however, is more GTS than GT3"

"No, this Porsche is not everybody's darling. For a start, it does not quite match the even costlier GT4 for poise and panache"

"Those who seek a decontented, lightweight, no-frills driving machine are perhaps better off with the GT4 or the rumored GT4 RS. Those who enjoy open-top motoring and are not track-day regulars should probably zoom in on the Boxster S/GTS."

As I said many times but people shoot me, it's still a great car as is the GTS with x73, buckets and electric roof.

Just not quite right the new one, and with all the tech and light weight talked about still 35kg's more than the outgoing model ;-(

Electric roof and PDK-S would have made this car imo.

An electric roof with motors etc would add too much weight......against the whole ethos of the car.

Don t know why you think PDK S would suit the car.. especially as you have repeatedly claimed it is boring....scratchchin......more akin to high revving 9k engines like the GT3, 8800 RS where they are perfectly suited and a 'manuel' couldn t keep up. 'Manuel' is the best box for the Carrera engined Spyder and I love PDK S....on the right car.....thumbup

10kg weight for the electric roof I would take to allow the car to be a 1 car usable buy.

as for the GT3, are then not making a run out 911 Sport with GT3 engine , no rear steer but in Manual ;-).
