Fibreglass vs steel. Only a very few body panels were the same on the Jalpa and rigidity mods [including the steel roof] increased the overall weight.
Ah that explains it, I was quite shocked at the difference in weight between the roof panel of my 308 GTS compared to the one in the Jalpa!dinkel said:
In performance and drive: how does a 328 compare to a Jalpa?
It'll vary to some extent on the Jalpa in question but they are considerably heavier than the 328 and that will have a knock-on impact on their liveliness. They do drive well though - solid handling and road holding and a great noise.fyfe said:

That's right; but I'm not sure that it's really at the heart of this. After all, a modern Mini JCW is rather quicker than both most of the time.
It's about that intangible Ferrari vs Lamborghini thing.
Personally, I've always preferred a Raging Bull to a Prancing Horse.
Just more anarchic I suppose.

With a username like that I'd hope so. I'm partial to both. But putting brand views to one side for a moment, a 328 is likely to be snappier on the road than a Jalpa. After all, a modern Mini JCW is rather quicker than both most of the time.

For me it is the choice between individuality or the herd instinct. There were more F40s on display here than there were Silhouettes made!
I totally agree with you, I much prefer the gorgeous rough edged Lamborghini Silhouette rather than the mass produced albeit better finished Ferrari F40s.Edited by P300V8 on Wednesday 23 July 19:21
Can I just chip in here with my observations that when I first saw a Silhouette in the flesh I thought it looked so much more modern than a Uracco with its far more angular lines and those massive Pirelli P7 tyres. It's a damn shame they didn't sell more of them before being replaced by the Jalpa which I thought looked too well finished, almost plastic - and apologies to any Jalpa owners, you still own a terrific fire breathing Lamborghini.
I did actually chase an orange Uracco in the early 1980s on my Z500 Kawasaki motorcycle and was very impressed with its road-holding and speed, probably the first time I had encountered a Lamborghini in the flesh. A few years later I chatted with the same owner whom I believe was an telecom engineer for BT at one of the Supercar Test Days at the Goodwood race circuit in Chichester organised by Mike Pullen of Carrera Sport in West Sussex, who owned a dark purple LP400S Countach which was well set up and embarrassed quite a few far more powerful cars on the track, and I'm damn sure he owned or had access to a yellow Silhouette.
To this day I still think the Silhouette looks pretty spectacular compared to the Uracco, or indeed the Jalpa model which preceded it. Just wish I owned one!
