Cylinder De-activation.
Discussion
We are in the process of changing Molly's Polo GTI to a Polo GT Blue Motion. The new car's engine is fitted with cylinder de-activation which means that 2 of its pistons are denied fuel between 1400 rpm and 4000 rpm . This allows the car to return diesel like fuel consumption, touch the throttle and you instantly regain full power. I understand Audi and Bentley are using similar systems. Maybe Aston Martin should consider going down this route. The fuel saving would be great but more importantly the Co2 emisions would come right down thereby reducing the amount of road tax that we pay . It's the second bit that gets me! If a V8 dropped to a V4 and a V12 to a V6 we would all still have plenty of power for around town and motorway cruising.
I am sure AMG will have a multitude of plans for AM's new engines.

They could just weld a Cygnut to the back of a real Aston and when you don't need the full power of the real car the engine will cut out and the Cygnut will fire up its little 2 stroke engine! Again, touch the throttle and you instantly restart the V8/V12 and regain full power!
Another bonus would be that there are 4 extra seats in the back!

Jockman you sort of miss the point. Check out the performance figures for a Polo GT, The engine is a 1.4 turbo petrol knocking out 138BHP . Road tax £20 a year due to cylinder de-activation, 62.4 MPG. The point I am making is Aston will probably produce with AMG's help a range of of V8's with forced induction and cylinder deactivation. Added to that the new Vantage is rumoured to be considerably lighter. They will have a serious contender on their hands.
The Germans all seem to have their own CO2 routes, but I've no idea what the AMG one is - BMW would appear to have followed the Stop / Start route which (inter alia) gave them CO2 levels that Merc and Audi just could not live with.
You are right though, Bobby, at some stage AM are going to have to do something about CO2

Tony, have you got any news for us? All this talk of Thor must be getting you in quite a state.
Rob (Bobby darling) my 'state' and the current position of it, is something that I do not wish to discuss in public as it may well offend those of a sensitive disposition But NO and YES
At least you won't need shares in an oil well any longer if the Polo is going (see what I did there...oil...bobby...JR...Polo....aww forget it)
