My 2nd ever car at 18 was a rusty Alfasud, after many months of looking bought another this week and they are just as good as I remember....days of buying one for £350 are over though!!

Only 105 Bhp but twin webbers and that fantastic flat four and great grip make a really fun car to drive

I thought people always warned about going back to an old flame!

You have whet our appetites now - pictures?

Can't be many left. I have not seen one for many years.

Didn't buy a silver 4 door 1.3 SC back at the end of the '80's - I still regret that now as it drove simply beautifully.

I do also remember going to see a 1.5Ti which my friend bought at about the same time but that turned to dust in just a few months due to rot everywhere and was scrapped IIRC. He never bought another Alfa.

Haven't seen one on the road for years. Best of luck with yours.

The sprint was especially good.

I don't think I would ever have spent only £350 on one though.

I bought a 1980 Alfasud 1.5ti, a pre- hatchback, back in 1988 from an apprentice at RAF Horton. It came for £300.00 with a short MoT and rusty front - foam filled chassis legs.

It is without doubt THE car I miss more than any car I have sold. By comparison a Mk1 Golf GTI was an unrefined, harsh, clumsy trolley when compared to the Alfa. A truly exquisite car, if left unmodified.

I have fond memories of stopping to unclip the air filter lid above the twin downdrafts just so that I could hound it through the surrey and Hampshire lanes at full bark.

Only a Fulvia comes close

Never got around to driving one but always really liked them. My pal had an early 33 green cloverleaf when I had my first Delta, it sounded fantastic and the interior was great. Think he sold it for 50 quid.

These were absolutely brilliant had a few in the early nineties before the rust had killed them off.
I had a white 1.5 83-Y cloverleaf that had done 32,000 miles then a white 1.5 veloce that had the full bodykit and uprated koni shocks which gave it lovely lift off overstear on demand.
The best one I had though was a 1.7 veloce, again low mileage 35,000 miles, I loved that car they were so cheap for how much fun they gave, and such a good looking coupe.

Me too. I absolutely loved it in spite of the bodged conversion to RHD; boot release was by the nearside door, and the handbrake too close to the passenger seat. Boy did it handle nicely ... inboard disk brakes too ISTR.

I'd love to find a nice early Sprint, seems there aren't many left - 3 Sprints and 10 Veloces, and lots of those will have plastic all over them.

Had this in early 1990's when I was 21. Had to change front wings for new (very expensive) ones from Holland as the originals were rotten. Sad to see it go, but got married etc...

Boot release was always on the left hand sill for RHD until 1982 when it was swapped over.

Handbrake was always centrally located.

Not in this Sprint, and I'm pretty certain mine was similar on the earlier model.

It's only a bit offset but enough that your knuckles caught on the passenger seat's piping

I remember it being suggested to me that an Alfa design engineer had taken a look at the Citroen GS, with it's discs all round, low unsprung weight being inboard on the front, handbrake on the front also, Flat four but air cooled. There is no doubt that the Alfasud has all the same features, with a much nicer engine, suspended from a single bolt. the later Sprints got watered down though, with outboard brakes and if i remember correctly, some even had drums on the back. The early car with its super supple ride and perfect balance was pretty special, but no doubt expensive to build

How I hankered after one of these until I sat in one. What was that? A car built for ants?

Best car ever. Period.

Had one in red like above, but sadly without the alloys.
Did a Southern Europe roundtrip in it when I was 22.

Formative driving.

Who sad you can't drift a fwd car. You can!

I've been driving this in my dreams ever since, despite
now owning "better" modern cars. Sadly I couldn't save it
from the crusher back then.
