Getting rid of private plate
Discussion
I recently bought an early E46 3-series BMW that the previous owner put a private plate on (I presume in an attempt to hide it's age). Is there any way to have the car returned to a correct 'age related' plate other than buying a personalised plate from that year? I think the personalised plate on the car at the moment just looks a bit naff.
Or, for free...
You write to dvla requesting to surrender the current reg and ask for them to issue a standard dated plate (preferably the original issued to the car on registration). Send the V5C, Original MoT and note the tax disc serial number in your letter.
Send by Recorded Delivery, and expect it to take a few weeks...

What's the reg?
It's a mixture of numbers and letters that help identify a vehicle but that's not important right now.Elaine Dickinson: A hospital? What is it?
Rumack: It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.
I've just done this.
Send V5C to DVLA (don't fill any of it in) with a covering letter explaining that you don't want the current 'personal' plate, but a regular age-related one. Post at PO counter and keep proof of posting receipt.
Wait six weeks, then chase them by phone. V5C with new reg will eventually arrive by post. You can now have new plates made up and put on your car. Tax disc with new reg on it will arrive separately by post. DVLA told me that it would be OK to drive with 'new' reg no but 'old' tax disc (but check this yourself with them, obs). Job done.
Costs nothing - but you don't get to keep 'old' reg.

That sounds even better. I can't see the plate being worth anything really so would rather not have to try selling it. Rayy, thanks for the confirmation, sounds like the way to go. Now I just have to pluck up the courage to allow the DVLA the opportunity to cock something important up for no real possible benefit. Common sense would suggest not giving them the chance but for some reason the plate does bug me so I'll have to chance it.
Sent my stuff off to them about a month ago, so will have to chase them soon.
At the same time I put a plate on retention onto the missus' car (paperwork was sent to dvla on the same day) and received it all back last week. I suppose paying £80 for that service gets a bit of priority.
May as well do it now instead of when you think about selling/trading in the car.
