Headunit (screen) just died on my Smart Nav

I have a Smart Nav (from Trafficmaster) system hardwired into my Alpina and it's been great. The button & voice system still works fine but the (blue) screen just shows "connection error" when I hook it up. I've tried cleaning the connections etc but I think it's had it (after 6 years). I don't really want to replace the whole system but it's nice to have the screen option when I'm far from home. Has anyone here upgraded to the newer colour screen? Worth it? Before I order a replacement blue screen I'm also wondering if there's any "fix" if this is a problem that people have encountered before. Any feedback much appreciated
