Land Rover 1969: PH Ad Break

A Kiwi commercial that gets straight to the point of Land Rover!

Land Rover doesn't spare the pennies when it comes to advertising and marketing nowadays. Getting Mrs V Beckham on board for the Evoque project if of course the famous example, but taking a Range Rover Sport to Pikes Peak can't have been cheap. Neither can racing a Spitfire or closing down half of New York for Daniel Craig to launch the Sport earlier in the year.

This 44-year-old commercial reminds us of a far simpler time for Land Rover, where it didn't have to possess a shred of on-road comfort or driver luxuries. They were Land Rovers in the purest term, and what better to way to advertise its abilities than by filming some properly tough off-roading?

The ad was filmed in New Zealand, where we see the Landie tackle craggy inclines, dense foliage and a far deeper river than looks safe. All at a surprisingly spirited pace too. The car appears unfazed by the adventure, which is more than can be said for the driver, sawing away furiously at the wheel.

As well as indulging our nostalgic tendencies, this ad makes the recently announced Bowler Defender Challenge look even more exciting.

Watch the ad here.

My 110 taking my 53 series 1 off for some TLC, does anyone have a lower tailgate for a series 1 for sale by any chance?

Hope they disconnected the viscous fan before fording that river!!!!!

They are truly cracking vehicles. I just couldn't ever bring myself to sell my old Series 3. It never misses a beat, is truly unstoppable off road and does everything you could possibly want of car (just not very comfortably!).

I'm sure all these Hill Descent Control, Varying wheel slip setting etc, etc that are on modern 4x4's are all well and good, but to be honest, nothing more than low range, some good tyres and a bit of experience driving through different terrains produce exactly the same results.

How did they do that without a snorkel

"non rusting body panels" LOL as if that kept the welder away

The air filter is an oil bath way up high at the back right hand side of the engine out of the way, near the bulkhead and the intake is at the top of the left front wing. They can wade to pretty good depths without a snorkel (way, way above the height of the sills, although you'd rather not, as the doors leak like a sieve)

The welder is far too busy working on the the "non rust-proofed chassis" to have time to even think about body panels!

Diesel one's are best for swimming as they have no electrics.

(P.S. the 'snorkel' on mine is disconnected, honest)

I was told from a Landrover test driver that snorkels are for desert driving rather then water and make very little difference in water. No idea of this is true or not....

I bet that hurt, a lot. Probably why it stopped as soon as it came out of the water - the driver probably had concussion!

Nearly right

The one in the ad is a Series 3 (which is odd for a 69 advert... probably a prototype as the Series 3 came out in the early 70's)
The oil bath air filter is in the engine bay, driverside of the engine, next to the battery and draws air in through the top (from inside the bay, high up) level with the wing tops.

The vent in the passenger wing is only the intake for the heater.

Now you know where my forum name came from paperbaggetmecoat

ETA: that jump at the end will have hurt... I doubt he has any spine left intact

This is wading, and yes he did make it with no problems.

About 45' wide there and it did get about 3" deeper so,
above the wheels in the end.

All those who wade their Land Rovers... I hope you've had the axle and gearbox breathers extended above the water level hehe

Naw, no need to worry about that, the water can just drain straight back out of the leaky swivelhousings / handbrakedrum seal.................

Or maybe not............ ;-)
