Been in Singapore for a year and not driven apart from hiring a Corvette for a day in the US.

Quick look at NZ car hIre tells me most stuff is sold out (how is that even possible) so looks like I'm condemned to drive a Corolla for 3 weeks!

Should have said looking for something from 13th December to Early Jan.

I'm on the South Island at beginning of Jan for a while (look in the Forum part of my profile and you'll find a thread about the itinerary) and the only real thing that seemed worth while was a MX5. I wanted to hire a Boxster/Z4 Cab/etc but the MX5 seemed to be the best available option. I've gone for a small independent MX5 chap who seems to be well respected in reviews on the internet.

Excellent, I had a little MX5 track car in the uK which was an absolute hoot....

Only issue for us will be luggage space for the Mrs entourage of clothing! Do you have the chaps details?

Only South Island - from Christchurch. Is that ok? Will PM you if so

Need to pick up the car from ChristChurch on the 18th and return to Nelson Airport on 23rd December - unfortunately MX5 will be too small - ideally looking for something manual fun - rear wheel drive and convertible but with enough boot space to fit 2 large suitcases - Mission impossible??

Perhaps a little too big and auto only but I thoroughly enjoyed hooning an Avis Holden Commodore around NZ last Christmas. It was a good steer.

Yes a decent V8 would be fun, who did you use to hire it from?

Not sure there are many V8's around, but most companies will have the Falcons/Commodores which are large RWD sedans with powerful V6's.

The risk is you could get given a FWD Aurion/Camry

Yes, seems to be a dearth of interesting motors to hire with our particular pick up and drop off points...

Perhaps I'll ask the wife to just bring a rucksack then we can hoon around in an MX5.

Can't remember the details, but there's a guy who hires mx5s from an industrial estate beside auckland airport, at least there was a couple of years ago...
