Its been I few years since I went to Nashville - but we had a great night at Roberts Western World; the Ryman Auditorium was interesting; the Country Music Hall of Fame museum was good too - sadly when we went the iconic RCA Studio B wasn't open for visitors (thats where a lot of big hits were recorded 'back in the day', including much of Elvis's work).
Downtown there are plenty of bars with free live music - the bands expect to be tipped - mostly country music. Also there were a quite few quirky shops selling vintage and antique stuff.
My few days there were mainly focussed on the music side of things - but I have to say Nashville as a city was clean, and the people were friendly, unlike Memphis - which (at the time) was a bit of a dump, and crawling with beggars.

You can't go to Nashville without going to the Grand Ole Opry (www.opry.com)
Gaylord Opryland Hotel (http://www.marriott.co.uk/hotels/travel/bnago-gaylord-opryland-resort-and-convention-center/) is worth checking out as well, I didn't stay there but spent a half day marvelling at the inside of the place!
Beyond that depending on the time of year the Titans stadium is right downtown, there are a number of music themed tours and many good bars to visit.
It's a nice city, though of all the places I've been to in the US, it's the only one where I've ever managed to end up somewhere unsafe without even trying (the police stopped me and gave me a lift back to the centre!)

The gaylord is quite a way out, although quite self contained. I stayed 3rd and 4 th July ( mad) at the Hermatage, but made a point of doing the ole oprey show and walking around the complex. Nashville was quite early into my New York to LA road trip and for me was the best place I stayed. Although I fly into Vegas at Xmas for a motorhome road trip I did try to have a few days in Nashville, just not feasible. Downtown is fab, never really been into country music, but modern is great, so many bars with live music, at my age I even stayed out until 4am but lost my posh specs!! So get a cab into Nashville and enjoy downtown as well as the complex.
