Title says it all really - I've had 3 HTC Ones', all been returned due to blown speakers (the last one managed less than a week!), and I just cant be arsed to have another one, and the other "big" smartphones are way over budget, so I'm going to be asking for a refund and going for a Moto G (from P4U).

Before I commit, (and having read a couple of reviews), is there anything seriously wrong with this as a "basic" smartphone or should I be looking at something else instead? The only downside that I can see is that there is no microSD slot, so storage capacity is limited to say the least, but I can always download and remove photos to the laptop, and music is easily swappable.

Nexus 5 is probably more on a par with the HTC, if it's not too much of a price bump?

I only use it for phone, text, nav, Suduko and the odd facebook check-in, and I'm already regretting coughing up £470 for the HTC (so I'm kinda relieved the third one has followed the first two), so I can play Mr Tightwad with a clear(ish) conscience. Mind you, Zoe was impressive...

Moto G is more like Nexus 4 level. 8Gb variant can be had for £89 if you want to be Mr Thrift.

Ordered one for the sister (new years pressy), reviews state it's probably the best bang for buck out there now in a phone. Battery life is supposedly a lot better than most high-end devices as well.

Anyway, because of low availability it'll only come in half of december, but I'm quite curious to have a go!

I've got one and I'm pretty pleased with it. Feels nice and quick, and does everything I want of it. I've come from and iPhone 4 and it's certainly a lot quicker than that. I think it's an absolute bargain for the price of it.

Placed a Tesco order yesterday, delivery due on Tuesday, don't think that's too shabby.

Its a bit, ermmm, dinky, after the HTC smile.

Fits my hand better though, buttons on the right side rather than top, screen is bright and readable, seems to be quite snappy in operation, no complaints so far. Oh, and I got a tenner off for my troubles.

Do you know if it's locked to Tesco?

It was, but an unlock off eBay sorted it in 10 minutes. Cost £2.04.

Raving review from Android authority:

Looks like very few trade ins for the price, which is pretty unique at that price point.

I've just bought one and everything is relative ... it feels huge compared to the HTC One V and Sony Xperia U I have had previously.

(Xperia U was the biggest waste of electronic space ever invented, should anyone wonder. Thus far, the Moto G is light years better.)

I've had one for 2 weeks. It is a good phone indeed - speedy, well made, great screen. Camera is a bit mediocre.

I'm just having trouble getting used to Android after iOS for many years. For example (and I may be missing something) the simple way that phone numbers would be hyperlinked in iOS so you could dial straight from the email, text or webpage, and the way that dates would be recognised and put straight into the calendar with one click. I hadn't appreciated how useful both features are.

Also the Google experience is a bit more wild west than I'm used to - I had a bricked phone for hours today after downloading an app that would purportedly recognise that I was at home or driving and disable the lock screen. Finding a way to get around the lock screen was not easy!!

Saying that - for the price and quality I'm going to stick with it. It is not really the phone's fault. If only I could hackintosh iOS onto it!!

My Mum is ordered one today for delivery tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing what its like but everything I've seen makes it look amazing.

I'm sorry you went through 3 HTC Ones. Did you play music at maximum volume for a lot of the time? I'm not casting blame, just curious as I got my One in August and its been alright since then. I'd hate to have it suffer problems.

Out of curiosity, what is anyone doing about cases for their Moto G? I need one and am wondering what's good and what's not.

'Nother update. I've had my Moto G for the thick end of a month now and it's simply superb. Suddenly, smartphones make sense.

Best £120 (16Gb model) I've spent on tech for a long, long time.
