My 1997 Forester ST/b needs a new NSF CV joint....So, phoned up apparently good and highly recommended Japanese import car part specialist and obtained what I was assured was the correct part....All I was asked at the time was whether I wanted one with an ABS ring or one without. My car has ABS..so "With please...." was my response. I booked my car in to get said part fitted, but (and no surprise.....this is just typical of my luck....) the part did not fit.
The garage could not remove the prop shaft, and the old and new joints looked distinctly different....the new one was bigger, amongst other things. The garage said that it does look like the prop is not supposed to be removed. They did not want to use excessive force in case they rendered the car undriveable....but they gave it a blummin' good try!
At no point did the apparently good and highly recommended Japanese import car part specialist mention anything about all in one cv joints and prop shafts.....though I do remember seeing such parts on ebay and other sites, but not for my Forester.
So....can anyone help with this? Does anyone have a clue about what CV joint I need?...And where I can get one? I have started a nice collection of brand new Forester parts....Keep going like this and I will be able to build a Forester from scratch!

I got mine from Import Car Parts but mine was the one "without" the ABS ring. I wasn't sure what one I needed so I gave them my VIN number and they sent the right part out.

Mine is a 1997 S/tb

this might help with removal. Did you garage remove the spring pin?

Hi markCSC, thanks very much for the info in your post...Very useful!!
I will speak to the garage, but I am sure they did everything right....I hope.
I really like my ST/b but it has been a faff so far to get any parts....combination of being messed around and my own (considerable) bad luck...So it is likely that i will be selling my ST/b frown
I own a far more rare American car...possibly only one in the country, and I can get parts for it in 24 hours.
As I say...probs just my bad luck....
Thanks very much once again! smile
