Exactly, it will be great to not have to remove rear footpegs and replace tax disc holders on a bike every year, sadly mine is only taxed until the end of March so will have to do it once more.

Just bumping this as I was in the Post Office today taxing the car as I'm off on holiday for the next while.

Then the Post master reminded me I wasn't getting a disc.

So come the 1st of October there will be no disc on the car.

I await the verbal abuse and reporting from nosey neighbours for having no disc displayed.

Hell I bet a few cars will even get vandalised for having no tax.

This is great news for us cabrio owners...... I used to hate leaving the car parked with the foof down in fear that the disc would be nicked.....

And great news for those of us without windscreens smile I never got round to making a bike style holder, but now I don't need to bother - I presume on Oct 1st I can just remove my tax disc??

Edite to add: Yes, we can remove our tax discs after October the 1st: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-cha...

I have removed mine already, I cleaned the windscreen the other day and though sod it, and stuck it in the glove box.

I think, as a side benefit, anything that avoids clutter on the windscreen is a good thing, some cars have the disk with a holder that's twice as big again, only a small percentage of the total screen but better without it. I wonder if any accidents have ever been contributed to by the bottom left of the windscreen being partially obscured ?

I wouldn't imagine there will be any vandalism or problems as its fairly well publicised and a few months from now nobody will have a disk.

As an owner of a LHD car I am glad that I will finally be able to remove the damn thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does given the depths to which some people in the UK appear to be able to sink to over trivial matters such as people parking on the road in front of their house.

It certainly does.

As for acts of vandalism I can just imagine some ignorant scrote saying to themselves "look at that flash bd and his untaxed motor". Just another excused to justify a keying.

I have also spoken to quite a few people who know nothing about this or had forgotten all about it. That's here in Northern Ireland mind, where the big VED story was about the local motor tax offices closing here and everything moving to Swansea.

Nooooo! The many devotees of the Real Good and Crappy number plate threads would lose what little life we have today!

Not vandalised but years ago I had an officious neighbour report me for no tax. They obviously didn't see or know the significance of trade plates. The neighbour didn't have the balls to speak to me directly.

However, it does beg the question how will sellers of cars prove to buyers that it has so many months of tax left? unless of course you can direct them to an electronic proof? confused
I imagine you'll still get an invoice.
When a car is now sold, it will be sold with no tax and the new owner will have to purchase tax for the vehicle. The original owner can claim the remaining tax back from the vehicle.

It will be the date put for sale/transfer on the V5 which the tax will cancel from. Obviously a seller could forward date that to the end of the month but they are then at risk of the new owner getting 673 parking tickets and 26 speeding fines in the meantime.

I took mine off on Monday but a quick poll of the office car park suggests I am the only one as well.

Took mine out this morning as I had to renew it yesterday and saw one other car on the way to work without a disc in the windscreen.

A very brief survey on my bike ride in this morning revealed one car in the office car park without a disc, and possibly another on the road but I couldn't be sure. To be honest, I can't decide if this comes down to a lack of information, or the usual apathy from the general public regarding matters of motoring.

Without going off topic too much..... This is what neighbours around my neck of the woods are like. Watch the video, you will have a right laugh.

is this when the owner sends back the v5c with new keeper details and then how will payment/ refund be issued?

From my understanding, you can only claim back whole months of tax when selling the car.

This is where the money is made, i sell a car on the 10th day of the month, I loose the payment for that month, but get any remainder full months tax refunded to me.

The new buyer CANNOT drive the car on the road until the tax is paid, this can be done online, 24/7 (maybe even by phone?)

But what are the odds you can only buy whole months? so you loose the first 10 days of that month. The government get 'double bubble' for 1 month on every car sold.

I dont know of a way around this apart from buy and sell the car at midnight at the end of the month.

Is there anything a seller needs to do to get tax back now or is it just send back v5c as per normal?
