What did you do in the garage yesterday?
Discussion
Peter, so you remember Mat Smith's newly completed race car at its bedding in visit to Snetterton?
Him and John Halstead working together in the pit garage in almost total silence after it had done less than 100 miles, stripping the top off the engine after Mat had heard the death knell of the cam etc?
That was down to lifters that had been supplied, brand new with the brand new cam, by a reputable TVR cam grinder. Unfortunately, they had bought in the lifters, presumably from China, and they had got a batch that had not been hardened. 80 miles in the soft lifters had mushroomed, stuck in the guides and were trashing the cam lobes.
Ian's woes look, to my inexperienced eyes, like something similar - the early failure of some small but wrongly made parts, supplied brand new but not fit for porpoise.

Its worse than not that bad!! 8000 miles into a brand new engine and:
Nearly all pads off rockers
Missing pads means the valves all get crowned
Swarf getss in the oil and knackers all bearings and shells:
Cam showing sign of wear
and crank needs a regrind, not to mention chamfering of the oil ways
As I said in my earlier post "went up the garage and cried"
Worst things happen at sea I guess so pretty relaxed about it, hopefully all being sorted under guarantee. Now I need a drink!!!!

Thing is, were the rockers new or Ian's originals, (or a set of used RV8s)?Him and John Halstead working together in the pit garage in almost total silence after it had done less than 100 miles, stripping the top off the engine after Mat had heard the death knell of the cam etc?

I'm glad JE put his hands up to it no matter.
When a set of those rogue lifters broke down in 2K miles, the supplier didn't want to know as I had built the engine.
Of course, at that time these rubbish lifters were just breaking cover but rumour has it that the trade new of several instances already…….

Cried cos I couldn't find any rope!!I'd be looking for the rope
Peter - all rocker assembly was brand new and appears to be the cause of all problems. Can you edit the post please to avoid naming and shaming, particularly as engine builder has agreed to a rebuild. st happens I guess.

Ian, that's a proper PITA. Feel really sorry for you as I've admired your RV8 developement over the years.
I've got some of these-

Some shocking pictures guys, [rockers/lifters] I had some brand new rockers from a Land Rover dealer and the pads hadn't been pressed into the arms properly exposing visible gaps. I took 'em back and was accused of being 'too fussy' Tossers.
Back in 1974, a group of student friends of mine drove a Landrover and a 1960s Bedford van to the Himalayas and back. The Landrover distributor drive cog disintegrated, and a new one was made for them......by a blacksmith in Kabul. Worked fine. So no accuracy needed in a Landy.By the way, the Bedford van required no maintenance whatsoever. I was rather proud of that, because I serviced it for them before they went to save money, using my minimal tool kit, and on axle stands in the college's back yard. Things were simpler back then.....

Looks nice but a waste of time as it all peals off, better to have manifolds zircotec I am am afraid got the t shirt Well try shoving 530 bhp through and see what happens, the zircotec foil that is flexible offers better protection , just look at the backing and heat shielding properties , the foil is just reflective so is bacofoil

Either the stresses were two much for OEM or as Anthony says some poor quality gear has found its way in.
Engine going back to the supplier early next week for a full rebuild.

I'm missing the point here. Are you saying you've tried laggers aluminium tape and it peeled? It's an industrial material that sees pretty extreme conditions. I think it is a good idea to use this foil because I have experienced it lasting very well. I'm sure your process works too but having not personally experienced it I wouldn't like to comment on ithttp://www.zircotec.com/newsitem/3/137

Same as Bobfather used it over 8 years ago and only recently did it again as part of a refresh (engine removal) providing the surfaces are grease free it def dont peel off and protects my chassis top rails POR15 paint even after all those years the paint underneath was like it had been done recently I use it to secure some thermal heat barrier cloth that I re-used, this stuff even gave be a bit of life out of the old inner wing heat shields that had rotted and we know how hot this area gets still no peeling and the best bit is even the branded stuff cost shirt buttons, only recently done again below Edited by Sardonicus on Friday 27th November 10:37
