996 engines; what are the odds?

Having re engined a Boxter with THAT engine, it is evident that the car is a lacklustre thing with dead steering and an excessively complicated and unreliable engine. I would rather live with a TVR tuscan and it's equally short lived but simpler speed six, at least the car has some character between rebuilds!
Seriously though, you need one with a very credible and expensive rebuild by a good indy, anything else is a lottery
As is life! Get one bought ffs.Seriously though, you need one with a very credible and expensive rebuild by a good indy, anything else is a lottery
TX.
I bought a 996 3.4 last year. I'd owned a few air cooled 911s - 993s and 3.2 Carreras and loved them. I belonged to the 'I wouldnt touch a 996 without it already having a rebuild' gang.
So I found one that had a Hartech rebuild - £8.5k bill (cracked cylinder head was the problem). I spoke to the engine builder there to check that the engine had been future proofed as much as poss. It had been - all cylinders re-lined/updated IMS bearing with stonger shaft, air/oil seperator/ new chains/ clutch etc etc.
So, I was happy to purchase on having confirmation of this information.
Rest of the car 'checked out' - it seems prospective buyes can get hung up on engine health and forget about expensive suspension/ brake / tyres / exhaust systems that may need replacing.
Here's hoping early 996 3.4s end up turning the corner in terms of popularity. I think all the crap out there owned by people who want a relatively cheap status symbol with no intention or money to run it will do me a favour as those cars get broken in the scrappers. Surely the good cars will be all that's left. The 996 could just be the new 964. Remember when nobody wanted one of those - bloody engine issues......

The same post was made twice in the thread. Hence 'deja vu' which means already seen, or the suggestion that youre experiencing something which has already happened.

I'm seriously thinking of changing to a Carrera 4S Tiptronic for sale locally to me, it's done 105,000 miles and at the moment the engine is fine, but for peace of mind I'd like the IMS bearing changed to an upgraded unit. I know it's recommended this is done during a clutch change, but there's no clutch on this car.
Any Porsche specialists in the South Wales area can carry this out, and a rough idea of the costs please, so I can use this info to haggle a bit of money off

I have a 2003 996 C2 with 125k on the clock and had no issues or anything changed regarding the engine. It had its original clutch changed 3k miles ago.
The best person to take your Porsche to is Chris Denning sports cars.He if the ex chief mechanic at the Cardiff OPC before setting up his own garage.

I was digging around some old car mags as part of a clearout the other day. I found an article about great classic cars to buy for under £7K which included the pre 74 911T on the opposite page to the MGB! For reference back then it was 2.5 or 2.7 944 for that sort of money, 968s and 964s started from about £16k, nobody in their right mind would have paid more than £10k for an SC as that was really 3.2 Carrera money.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
