and I know I got a bit carried away but this was my first proper play with Lightroom which has changed my image significantly.

Really, really like that. I reckon it would work brilliantly as a pure monochromatic or split toned bw print too.
Thanks mate. I'll have a crack at it and see what I can come up with. Really enjoying tinkering in LR at the moment.

Thanks!

Yes I used lightroom. I didn't really know what I was doing with it so just played with all the sliders until it looked a little sharper.

Thank you very much for the kind comments. It was a while ago now but I was on the beach waiting for it to get dark to have a fire. Snapping away on the phone while the sun set and and I think I just got very lucky they turned out well.

For my taste, I'd look at lowering highlights and boosting shadows a touch, then a dose of vibrance and a bit of clarity.
Just one opinion mind.
No, I agree. Having looked at it on screens other than my work one (where I processed it and wouldn't usually). Made some tweeks this morning...

I'm happier with this one biggrin Doesn't look as flat.
May I ask what you did to this?

Looks great by the way.

2 minute edit smile

There is a massive amount you can do depending on taste, expertise etc - especially if starting with a RAW file.

Just had a little play around with some simple, but free, software. Colours are a bit more vibrant

What benefit does RAW give you exactly?

thanks

PP is personal - everyone has their own taste.

My view is that the sky in the original looks the most natural (think both DD's and the recut are over-saturated*), but I like DD's foreground better.

* I try to reduce the brightness on blue alongside extra saturation if I'm giving sky more 'punch'...but as DD is a better 'tog than me I wouldn't take my opinion as worth much more than just that - some bloke's opinion...

Here's one more I took. Just upped the saturation a little and increased the temp a touch on white balance. It looks better than the original except the sky seems a bit over-exposed now. How could I go about sorting the sky out, without effecting the rest of the image?

Many thanks!

I really should make a thread on help, rather than posting here.

Cheers

Well I'm no expert but simplistically you have all the data the sensor captured so, for example, can recover more from shadows and highlights etc etc

Your shot above looks fine as it is! smile

The sky is the only area that is predominantly light coloured, so lowering the highlights (white/light colours) should work. It's often one of the first things I do with sky shots as it gives more definition to clouds which become less hazy.

The alternative - not necessary on this image, but possibly applicable for others where you have highlights in the foreground that you don't want touching - would be to use a graduated filter (a digital equivalent of a physical grad.) Lightroom makes that sort of thing really easy.
