Hi all, I have a very loved V70. The boss (wife) uses it for her daily commute about 15 miles each way. We have had the car from new (1999) and it has done only 147k.

She drove home yesterday and said the brakes were squeaking. So i had a run out in it, and it's strange as the brakes appear to squeak as you lift off the pedal, and not all the time.

I had the f/n/s bearing replaced last week, could it be related?
I braked hard from 30 to near on walking pace, and the same from 50 and 60 down to walking pace, and they appear to be working well but with this "squeal" when you lift off, any idea's please before I take it back

cheers

probably just some grit between the pad and rotor. It's been pretty wet recently and something may have splashed in there. I expect it'll go after a few days/week

It could be related, they would have to push the pads back to release the caliper from the disc.

I have a lot of experience with the pads/calipers and it sounds like they are binding slightly causing the squeal when cruising.

the caliper dust seal tends to come lose causing the piston to seize and stick...

also the caliper guide pin bellows can split/come loose and cause binding of the pads...

many thanks.....i'm hoping it's just dust as it is not happening so much (just done 600 miles this week end, and it is not so bad, if it continues after normality has returned to the work force of the country I'll have to take it back) 149k up now so the magic 150 will more than likely be up by end Jan !

Turns out the front near side caliper piston was "catching" and caused the "squeek" as it warmed up, dried out and started working. the front disc's had a large lip so would not take new pads, so had to have complete new front disc's/pads as well as a new f/n/s caliper.

They checked out the rear brakes....rear off side caliper had the complete piston seized, warped r/n/s disc, so required new disc's/pads, and new caliper.....when they removed the disc's the hand brake shoes were also stating to peal away....so required new shoes for the handbrake.......the insides of the rear brakes had not been gripping for some time judging by the ruston the discs

I'm now broke.....at least it should do ok on the brakes next MOT!

Funny thing was I complained that I thought the brakes had been done less than 2 years ago....so the garage looked it up on the "system", as they said if they had been done less than 2 years ago then they were covered by warrenty.....turns out i'd had them replaced over 5 years ago, and some 75,000 miles......so can't really complain I expect 75,000 miles for a set of brakes is not bad going....wot you lot think?
