The "official" Knockhill track day thread 2014

Davie, were you there today?
MTB, it stayed dry until half 2 and then absolutely bucketed down.
I managed to achieve my goal for this year of getting a sub minute lap with a few low 58's, happy with that also came closest yet to binning it entering the gravel at a pretty decent pace, kept her sunny side up so a good day all in

Yes i was there and i binned it on the second lap of my second session at macintyres. I'm fine but very sore and nothing broken.
Bike has some road rash from the gravel on the right hand side but Eddie from ERS got the bike ship shape in jig time and i managed another two sessions.
Got a wee run in the ambulance and nearly passed out while in the gravel. Great fun.
Can't wait for the next one.

Aye, i've decided to give the novice another go next time as it will be the right way round.
The wee NSR was in novice and was very confident in the corners. We had a wee play then he went off after locking his back wheel. I have a vid of that somewhere.

I'd be keen to see the video clip if you have it?...it's an NSR250 MC21 chassis with an 250 MC18 R5K motor in it that my Uncle and I built out of spare parts we've collected over the years. He also has a mint MC21 road bike with RS250 GP forks, brembo calipers, loads of HRC kit parts and TYGA bodywork. It's a proper 250 GP rep with bear minimum to make it road legal.
The lock-up was due to a light seizure - fuel starvation - nothing too serious and we were able to get it sorted in time for Saturday the 26th.
12th July reverse track morning was the wee bikes first time out since finishing it and it was my first time on a race track in 8 years so we were a bit nervous as to how both the bike and me would go ...more so me as I've been off bikes for such a long time. (skint)
I'm quite keen to try the Inters next time out but still a bit worried about getting in peoples way on the straights as the "big bikes" are miles quicker in a straight line and I don't want to go upsetting folk - it puts out about 60hp so I've got a moutain to climb in the corners to keep up.
...Not that I'm worried about telling folks that I'm in the Novice group anyways...everyone gets the same buzz and no matter how quick you are there's always plenty quicker. (unless your Marquez)

Hi Kenny, good to hear from you. i've checked back the footage and unfortunately it looks like my camera ran out of juice before your wee incident. Should say though that you have no issues in the corners but moving up to inters you're competing with nothing less than a 600 with a slightly unhinged pilot on the back of is (i'm jesting of course)I'd be keen to see the video clip if you have it?...it's an NSR250 MC21 chassis with an 250 MC18 R5K motor in it that my Uncle and I built out of spare parts we've collected over the years. I was there on the 26th but ran out of talent and crashed it. Recovering now though and will book up for the one in september. Lovely bike you have. Is it your uncle that helps you in the pit lane to get going etc. i watched the both of you on sat. top work.
Ta for checking that out for us. It probably didn’t look as dramatic as it felt…it happen on the change of direction heading into to Clark’s just as I was tipping it in the rear locked up and although I got the clutch in fairly quickly it felt like I my number was up! These things always seem worse when you’re the one perched on the bike! There are plenty video clips of the 12th & 26th on YouTube but I can’t see myself in any of them.
Hopefully not too much fall out to deal with from your get off on Saturday. On the bright side, it’s probably nothing compared to what it might’ve/could’ve/would’ve been had you been out on the roads somewhere. You don’t get the same chance to find the limit on the roads. Just tell folks that you were acting on the advice of Valentino Rossi – he always said that to improve you have to keep going faster til you crash and then you’ll find out where the limit is! I’m working to a different strategy…“It’s better to think I could’ve went 5 mph quicker through there than find myself wishing I’d went 5mph slower”
We probably won’t be back up there again until Sept either – in the next month we’ve got a spare set of wheels to get powder coated, a set of wets, a set of disks to find from somewhere and need to get a steering damper as the things shaking it’s head a bit on the flip through the chicane. Also need to look at gearing as 1st is too low and 2nd is too tall for drive out of the hair pin. Still running a wee bit rich off the needle jets too so a few things to take care of before venturing back out. It’s an expensive game but well worth it…there’s nae better way to spend a Saturday morning!
Give us a shout next time you see us up there, I’m Jamie & my Uncle’s name’s Kenny. He’s team manager, chief mechanic, main sponsor and sports shrink… keeps my head right!

Have a look here to see if you were papped. Although the photographer seemed to take photos of anything but moving bikes

Kenny id move to the inters, me and prolapse watched you at the hairpin and you're cornering speeds and lines were miles above the novices.
we thought it was a 400 because you cant run (or at least the say that) anything less than a 400 on a track day at knockhill.
that thing isn't that slow to be honest, we seen you against a few 600's and was surprised how nippy it was on the straights.
id recommend doing it the correct way, more chance for an overtake, keep the right line and guys on litre bikes will get past no problem.

Nice bike by the way.
Thanks guys, appreciate your comments about the bike. If I could figure out how to post pics I’d upload one of my Uncles road bike. Our track bike’s nice but his road bike is like something you’d have seen on the 250 GP grid. (Pre-Moto 2) Classic Motorcycle Mechanics did a 1 page spread in the “All your own work” section in January or February issue. (and there was a couple of shots of them in Practical Sportbikes the following month) If any of you ever get a chance to have a shot on one (NSR/TZR/RGV/RS) I can guarantee you’ll be hooked. We’ve been working with 2 strokes since the early 80’s…I struggle a wee bit on a four stroke, the wee 250's easy to chuck around by comparison.
We asked Knockhill about the 400cc minimum limit and they said they were more than happy for us to come along on the basis that 250cc 2 strokes are eligible for the SS400/Mini Twin Class and similar in performance. I think they were pleased to see a 250 stroker back up there as they all seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Knockhill seem to be happy for folks to do their own thing as long as nobody’s doing anything daft or dangerous. We’d be faced with a long haul doon south if it weren’t for Knockhill trackdays so I’ll be adding them to the Christmas card list! I wish they’d do more Saturday track mornings though.
I think I’ll give inters a bash next time out. What’s it like come September, do the numbers drop or is it still fully booked?
