I am seriously considering a LS powered FD RX7 - I've been toying with this for years - my dream car! And itching to get back into something with some raw power smile

How much are people paying for LS1 or LS2 turnkey engines with T56 gearboxes and all ancilliaries in the UK?

From my research it seems LS1+T56 could be anywhere from £4.5k-£5.5k dependent on mileage and more for an LS2? Does this sound right? More/less?

For such a vehicle, Craig at Dynotorque is the man to speak to, as he has done a few.

Prices....Well they really do vary

You'll just have to pay whatever the seller is asking, or wait and keep hunting really. There still isnt a huge supply to make them cheap, and complete packages for a conversion will likely carry a premium because they are complete. And for a conversion...as complete as possible always saves lots of hassle in the long run.

The cheaper option these days is the 4.8 or 5.3 variants. At least the base engines can almost be had cheap. Although nowhere near what they cost in the US

The 5.3 can be made to make some significant power as well...

The 5.3 is a popular swap engine in the US as well, because it is cheaper.

Edit: I am sure the 4.8 could be made to have some power too, but it isn't a common motor to build up (and I think it has a smaller bore).

4k dollars or UK Pounds ?

You might be lucky to find somewhere cheap in the US, I'd say you'd be incredibly lucky to get a complete engine/box package in the UK for £4k
In fact I'd say you'd be lucky to get a complete 5.7 LS1 for that money

I'm actually doing an RX7 LS conversion, Im using an LS6 with a T56 box. engine prices vary depending on milage and spec you decide to go for.

We've done quite a few LS conversions now... Ultima, Landrover, BMW E46, RX7 etc and have quite a few engines waiting to find a new home! smile LS1,2,3,6 and 7

If your interested in the conversion and an engine I'm happy to help, It's always nice to talk...

Good luck with the car if you decide to do it, It'll be awesome!!

I always keep an eye on these LS threads as I really fancy an E46 M3 with an LS3!

I've also been considering an LSx rx7. I'd be interested to know ball park costs for a swap (supply everything except the rx7 and fitting).

Currently own an ls2 monaro vxr but it would be more cost effective to sell it than break it for the engine/box.

Very interested in a "quote" to see if it would be worth my while to sell the monaro and know what i would have to budget for a rx7 shell/car.

£9K was the rough costs to get mine running initially all in but I did most of the conversion myself so minimal labour on top. Rolling RX7 FD was £900 I was very lucky there as it just had low compression. LS1/T56 with everything from the donor HSV/Monaro was £4250 delivered to the workshop. Custom exhaust system was £1K, LS7 clutch £400, Driveshaft £200, F body sump kit £400 to fit the chassis etc. Soon adds up.

I did try to bid on a couple from Cleveland Pick a Part (Ebay.com) but I reckon they weren't getting enough bids and pulled one and out bid me on a perfect LS6 pull out (it appeared again shortly after minus some good bits). Anyway the exchange rate went against (much better now) and the shipping costs have increased so I got one over here in the end.

I used a Samberg Performance fitting kit minus the really nice rad/fan/filter setup. That's another £800-1000 to add.

Tinker27 (Craig) does the fitting differently and arguably better as it's welded to the chassis rather just bolted in like on mine.

Sound's similar to what i had worked out in my head, i use the term "worked out" very losely, more like guessed tongue out

It's been on my mind for a while now, but not been that mechanically minded myself i would need somebody else to do the work, preferably somebody thats successfully completed the same swap at least once already.

What kind of labour costs would be involved on top of the above costs, i'd have around £12k to play with in total. Ideally i'd rather buy a completed car but it's not exactly something you see for sale everyday.

Does this sound realistic or am i dreaming thinking i could get it done within my budget?

Thanks for the advice, Mike.

I don't think there's anyone more experienced with LSx conversions that Craig in the UK at least. £12k would buy an LS1/2/6 converted car. LS3 based conversions would probably be above that figure unless the car spec is very basic.

Though I've done the majority of the work on my own car I still need the occasional use of a ramp for heavy stuff and had a fair amount of advice from a tuning garage in Cheltenham. Also helps I maintain their diags and office equipment!

What's the best way to contact craig and where is he based? I'd be happy enough with an ls2, absolutely love the engine in the monaro but would really like it in a lighter chassis like the rx7. The monaro is up for sale now and as soon as it goes i'll be looking at sourcing a rx7 shell and getting the ball moving, would be nice to talk to craig beforehand to have a plan of sorts.
