Pleased to see they arrived!

Strap aside top one looks cool.
Cheers! Now to see which actually keep time!
4 out of 7... not bad i guess! 6 of them are winders though so only need to keep time over the course of the day.

.. All have leather straps, but with the kind of wrist protector pieces on them....
Bund straps. They are of WW1 origin I think.

What's the point of them?

I'd be interested to know too. I've only kept the Bund strap on 2 of the watches, one of which being the Slava 27 jewel automatic day date (Topmost photo) that I wore today. Kept time pretty well! It's was made sometime between 1971 and 1983, and they appear to have been made in Cyrillic and western script; mine being the latter.

I don't know and google has nothing definitive. It suggests:

Keeps the watch raised above the wrist so it is easier to wind/adjust/synchronise without taking it off.

Stops poor quality metal from reacting with the sweat/salts from your wrist.

In the event of a cockpit fire the leather insulates you from the watch which would get hot. There could be some truth in this when you consider how hot a piece of metal gets when left out in the sun. Apparently the German air force still use them, but I suppose a NATO would do the job as well.

Interesting. So if I'm in a plane fire I won't get a hot wrist! Certain irony attached to wearing a USSR watch with a NATO strap but I think it might look good. Had to buy a watch servicing tool kit on eBay to alter some of the straps but it was only £3!

I have only recently put a black dialled JLC perpetual out of my mind, and then you go and post that.
