I've used Wahl with no guard for about ten years. Before that I had a pair of Nicky Clarke which went missing. Recently I couldn't be bothered and went to an Nigerian barber who when I said I wanted it as close as possible used an electric shaver after clipping. Gets it proper short.

Found and ordered this pair of combs on ebay which fills in the gaps nicely.

Anyone got a set that does a really close cut with no guide on it?

My current set of Philips doesn't seem to cut that close, so I end up cutting my hair every 4 days.

Has a Babyliss model that I kept until blunt which were great, but no longer manufactured. (Saw them on clearance sale in Tesco for a fiver a set a couple of years ago, should have bought enough to last me a lifetime.curse)
Try Wahl Balding Clippers. Blades have almost no overlap - can be used with guides also. I've a pair and they're great
Finally got around to buying some. They are tip top. Thanks everybody who recommended them!

what's the recommendation for beards/chopping it down a bit?

Don't need any of that fancy styling rubbish, it's a simply beard or stubble situation.

I've never used any beardy istubbly type products. Always used my hair clippers without attachments using the lever to adjust for stubble thickness. Occasionally I might use the 1mm attachment I now have for my Super Taper if I've left the stubble grow for a few extra days.

I tried that once, my facial hair must be too coarse and manly for hair clippers smile They didn't cut very well and I ended up looking more scruffy than before I started and with red, sore skin.

Be honest now . . . is this a subtle attempt at bypassing the Crack Shaving thread?!

I have had umpteen sets of hair clippers as I do my own and trim my extremely manly stubble :-)

I am current using some Panasonic ones (wireless) that come with one "comb" that you can adjust the length on.

I have to say they are great and I have been using them for about 6 months now.

I've got an old set of Remington Ceramics which seem to do the job pretty well. Always use it wothout the guards, and still seems to cut nice and short after all this time. No idea on the model number sadly, lovely set of clippers however.

Quite a short extension cable, but I inherited them off my father, who used to use them plugged into the shaver sockets in the bathroom, via a Euro adapter. I always thought this was slightly dodgy, but he was an Electrical Engineer with 30+ years experience, so I trusted him on it. Still doing it today 4 years after his death, and haven't blown anything up yet....

Mrs V does my (not for much longer) hair, or maybe that should be bonce, with a Phillips cordless something or other.

I'm embarrassed to admit that in the shortish while we've had it, it hasn't seen one drop of oil! frown
What's worse is I think there was a little bottle in the kit!

I tried one of the Babyliss cordless clippers, not the cheapest one or the most expensive but it wasn't up for it.
Now consigned to a cupboard somewhere.

Can anyone tell me, would simple 3-in-1 oil be okay to use on these devices?
I think I recall as a kid many decades ago the local barber using that on his pre-WW2 top of the line electric clippers. smile

Don't take this as gospel as it may be bad practice but on mine once the little bottle ran out I would always give them a rinse and a spray of WD40 after use, never seemed to harm them

Cheers KS.

As I recall, way back, one drop of 3in1 was the prescribed dosage! wink

Still not bought one. I have to now, my old model had finally stopped working, it must be over five years old, probably more.

Looking on Amazon.
Babybliss, Remington or Phillips?

Does the wahl super come with the v9000 motor? I'm looking at buying Wahl for use in the US and can not figure out the product hierarchy. I think the Senior 5 stars are the "best" but not sure where the icons come in. Can anyone make sense of the products?

I have never really looked into the hierarchy just bought the best vfm Wahl I could find based on the assumption that a basic Wahl is still better than any other brands
