I'm just looking at a flight to Chicago in the BA january sale. The price is good, but I don't actually know for sure the dates I want (80% certain).

According to this page

https://www.britishairways.com/travel/service-fees...

It will not cost anything, other than any fare difference, to amend the booking. Is this correct, or will they get me some other way if I do want to change?

Be very careful. If you book lowest fare then it will not be changeable without extensive charges if at all. if you book the flexible option which allows you to change etc then the price is rediculous. When looking try both pricing options to see the difference, you will be amazed.

The cost to change is likely to be horrid. A ticket bought in the sale will be a particular 'fare bucket'. If you try to amend the ticket later, there won't be any seats available in that fare bucket, so you'd have to buy from a different fare bucket. The fare difference will inevitably be painful.
You can get a cheap ticket or a flexible ticket - but not both at the same time.

Not sure how relevant it will be but I'm currently having to do exactly this. I had a short flight to Europe this week and the client wants to re-arrange meaning I've got to change my flight details to get back home. My original ticket was a cheapy one.

When you try change you are given options as to what alternative flight you would like, and then whether it'll be a high cost to change or medium or low.

My new flight is low and cost around 70 quid all in, with 60 of that being fees and charges. Considering my total flight was around 150 return it represnts a large percentage. Not a bother for me as I wont be picking up the tab, but it may be quite significant on a long haul flight that you've paid with your own money.

hth, I'm off to the bar since I no longer need to get up early!! beer
