Has anyone else experienced the painful mistake of paying for extended warranty only to get turned down for a legitimate claim?

I purchased my 2009 Audi RS6 V10 from an independent dealer which has a fancy showroom with guys in fancy suits making you feel you can trust them to sell you sound cars and provide sound advice. They offered me a 2 year gold warranty at a cost of £2000. I thought if I've spent £47,000 on a car with a big 5.0 V10 lump in it, I'd better get some protection if it ever breaks.
The glossy warranty brochure indicates you are totally covered for any eventuality that could possibly happen if your car developed a fault or broke down.
Well it is......until you try and claim for anything. After a small leak was spotted when I took it in for an early service at Teesside Audi I contacted the warranty company who simply said we don't cover seals....which they did...and when that didn't work they said it's wear and tear. Audi said it's not wear and tear as the seal should not fail at this stage. Warranty company simply try everything they can do to not pay your claim.

Up to now repairs that should have been covered has been £6500 and the £2000 cost of the warranty!!

WARNING....only buy extended warranty from your car manufacturer as they are more likely to want you to stay loyal to them and pay out.

I am contacting watchdog and the advertising standards and intend to take the warranty company to court, no matter what the cost is.

Has anyone else had a similar experience????

Moderator edit: no naming and shaming allowed.

If Audi have stated that it is not wear and tear and that the problem shouldn't have occurred at this stage then why don't you contact Audi Uk and give them some st?

Well, I had taken out cover with WD... Thought I wouldn't be covered for an item, but a diligent call centre operator insisted I was, and I got a pay out. And then, a year later same again. I was truly amazed, and reckon I got my money's worth. Big however: documentation essential, and plenty of patience. Not all warranties are bad.

I got a free warranty that was worth jack st with a car that i bought, because it didnt have full service history. It did have it, but they found lots of stupid loop holes

luckily it was an easy fix and i didnt actually extra for the warranty

Good luck, expensive beasts to run - im not brave enough!

We know about poor warranty providers - we used their warranties for a few months, before we realised they wouldnt pay legit claims then we binned them.

Most of the after market companies are the same.

Edited to add: The garage may well be as fed up with them as you are...the garage will be paying premiums to them also

The car has no warranty with Audi as it was passed it's manufacturers warranty, thats why foolishly I allowed the dealer to sell me the warranty. Audi have been brilliant and I know would of done the work as they would want me to buy another RS6 from them. They even showed me records of works carried out by them when this happened to another customer.

It was a driveshaft seal which meant the whole engine had to be removed to get to it by an Audi RS specialist = ££££££££

What on earth was the leak/seal failure that took £6500 to sort out?

Seems like it's a much better idea to put the money the warranty costs per year into a slush fund instead. It's what I do as the tales of woe on the RS forums is enough to put anyone off 3rd party warranties for life..

Edit-bit late posting that, blimey for a driveshaft seal, something not right there!

Feel for the OP eek but I never buy the fookin things for this very reason.

I inherited one once when I purchased a nearly new Impreza; the original owner organized a 3rd party warranty (Jap import so no standard warranty) for the full value of the car each and every claim! When I transferred it over to my name the paperwork came back altered to £1k each and every claim! I had a dust up with them but they never altered it back ...

I had a bulb replacement that was covered at a cost of £600 that they refused to pay and some suspension fault that hey got out of. Remember that VAT @ 20% is added to that so it's easy for a bill to add up at a main dealer.

If I ever needed extended warranty in the future, I would definitely go with the manufacturers own warranty as it makes total sense. I just stupidly believed the sales talk

I haven't got a problem with paying out for what is a very expensive car to run, but when you pay out for a warranty that turns out to be worthless....that bit I don't like.

The last time we used this company we put a 12 month warranty on a Range Rover Sport...we had to pay additional premium to cover "in car entertainment..ie sat nav etc"...8 months later irate customer rings me and tells me they are refusing to pay out for a new sat nav module because quote "its an inherent design fault".....The years premium at cost to us was nearly £800

Have you gone back to the dealer, they should carry some of the blame surely? (not fit for purpose?)

Not meaning to rub salt in the wounds, but 49k on a car that's not from a main dealer is madness.

I hope things work out ok for you.

Not good but remember the warranty company may only got say -£1500 from the dealers sale of your warranty, how much can they really cover and not make huge losses?

Which are the warranty company's that can be trusted on premium / Gold policies - will be interesting to know as this is the top end of the warranty market and you'd hope a £2k warranty would be effective.

It's all just insurance and I think it's all cack.
Only the initial warranty is any use to anyone, after that, you're better off saving a pot for unexpected issues.

I got one out once and it was utterly useless. They all are really.

This is why I would never buy a performance car outside of main dealer warranty. Most seem to be engineered so poorly that major components like the engine/gearbox/suspension/etc seem to st themselves after 5 years.
