O.K., I have 2 possible Boxster S cars that I am currently looking at.

The first is exactly what I want - low mileage, 1 owner, right exterior colour, second choice interior colour in full leather, all the toys etc. etc. There are 2 things that I'm not so sure about:

(i) Someone has managed to put 2 fairly obvious dimples in the rear (plastic) window. Being Dr. Fussy, I would want to replace this and my worse fear is that this will be mega-expensive.

Does anyone know how much this is likely to cost to rectify ?

(ii) It's got the Selectronic or whatever you call it semi-automatic gearbox. I thought that this would be a big plus, but I found it mildly irritating on the test drive and I'm concerned about reliability. Any comments on this ?

Car 2 (which I haven't seen in the metal yet) has the glass rear window - this sounds like a better bet - are there any downsides to these ?

Many thanks for any advice.

Best wishes

Peter

The glass rear window means that it's the facelifted model

The semi automatic is called tiptronic and I haven't heard aof any reliability issues

I really recommend you reseach the car more before buying

You want the more recent car with the glass rear window. I've had both and it is much, much more convenient.

With the plastic roof you actually (if you don't want dimples forming, then a crease and then a crack) to get out of the car once the roof is half off, then perform the "Boxster Chop" to persuade the plastic window to fold properly then get back in and complete the operation.

PITA.

The glass window is HEATED so condensation is dealt with conveniently.

Also: Tiptronic????

Buying a sports car and getting an "auto"??? If you live in a city I can see why but if not?

Sept 2002, I know because after placing my order, they announced the new model and it came out a month after mine was built, which didnt help the residual value one bit

I know I'm late in this conversation here, but I had a rear screen (plastic) crack last winter in the severe cold on my Boxster...

When I took it into Porsche they told me it would mean a new roof as they didn’t replace just the screen!!! Later spoke to someone else there and he informed that they could do it, but it was outsourced to a third party… Relief!

By this time I had contacted my insurance (Direct Line), because no way was I going to pay for any of this! They told me that I was covered under the Windscreen option! £50 excess and all done…

It does say in the manual, don't operate the roof below 5C. In this case it really really means it

Shame, as I used to love zipping around in my old MX-5 with the top down in the frost

I used to take the top off my old box below 5 degrees.

By warming the plastic with a fan heater first.

Oh the things we do...

It was this that convinced me to get a MY2003 in October of 2002 with the glass rear screen. Brilliant. I must check the manual and see what it says about operating the roof below 5 degrees - I'll bet they haven't changed the advice despite changing the technology.

£2K would be value for the glass rear screen. I paid a hell of a lot more than that to change the car!
