A mate of mine picked up his new Scirocco 170 tdi today, and then took it straight back as it was emitting substantial clouds of white/grey smoke, the dealer refunded him and gave him his PX back, they will take a look tomorrow but why would a 14k mile, year old VAG car create an impressive smoke screen ?

I was thinking that perhaps its been moved round a compound and perhaps needed a run but he said it didnt seem to clear and didnt seem like it was going to.

My first thought is that they knew it was a pup if they immediately took it back?

Was a VAG main dealer, car still under warranty, it drove fine on the test drive, its a shame as he has been dead excited all week and its been a bit of an anti climax for him.

I could understand a back street trader doing that with some old heap, but an 18 grand car from a main agent, they are goign to check it over but he isnt sure whether he wants to bother with it, especially if they say the smoke cleared, a new, modern diesel shouldn't do that under any circumstances and if it is the HG I wouldnt want to know, ok on a ten year old car, but not a nearly new one you will want to keep for a few years.

He might as well let them take a look. After all it's still under the original warranty and I presume it was bought under an approved used scheme so he'll be covered. Still it appears strange that it was fine on the test drive and now it's smokey.

Was it fuelled up prior to collection?

He got his money back so he has no interest apar from when they contact him to say whats been done, he was gutted but it isnt like they didnt make another few, the spec was what he wanted though, i.e. leather and no DSG

Yeah, they are a good looking, desirable, quality product with the right engine (well, the one that people want for economy, the right one is the R biggrin), from a main dealer with low miles they are quite pricey, my mate was saying he was ringing up and they were coming in and going within a couple of hours, seems there are a lot of people wanting them.

I think in that spec they are knocking on 30k new.

White smoke from a diesel is unburnt fuel

Mis-fuelled prior to collection causing fuel system damage? They'd certainly know it had been done, and would explain them taking it back without any argument

Hmmm, sounds plausible, as a lot of Sciroccos are petrol, wouldnt really want it if it had been mis fuelled and then run on petrol, can be a pretty expensive job to sort properly cant it ?

I agree, it just surprised me somewhat.

I'd prefer a Scirocco to my CC I think if the spec was identical.
