what exhaust drones (or not) on VXR8?

I'm thinking about time I upgraded my exhaust (Rich24 and Fishman take note) especially after Fishman's question last weekend (http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=69&t=1368039&mid=106885&nmt=SteveMJ+spotted+%3F).
However I'm wary about forking out £1400 to £2k for that and then have futher complaints from Mrs MJ. I occasionally look for 2nd hand ones but seen none (hmm, perhaps post a request)
From what I've heard I prefer the deeper rumble of the Walkinshaw exhaust, closer to the old V8 burble (like my mate's '66 GTO in the 70s).
I am concerned that there may be a drone at motorway speeds; ~2000 rpm and ~75 mph. Can any one comment if there is a drone on an auto VXR8?

I had the wortec 2.5 system on my ls3. Any aftermarket is going to drone no matter what people say but some drone more than others. On loud it was actually quiet off throttle, not very noticeable at cruising speeds. But I did find when the plates were inserted to make them quieter it made them a bit boomy.
Nothing is going to be like stock, the wortec was good. I hate niggles and had none even after 2000+ mile road trips.

I did a video of mine and Nicks (he had a walky) and I said to him that as much as I loved the Wortec that if I had another vxr8 I would get the walky. Nice nice sound just not as shouty

I have the walky performance, had it since I got the car 5yrs ago, centre box removed, no drone and many mway journeys (Essex to Newcastle) and quite civilized in the cabin.
best thing to do is to go out in other members car on mway and such like to listen for yourself, as you say a lot of money to spend so you want to get it right.

I've got a Walkinshaw Performance catback on my R8 auto, which is quieter than the bi-modal version, and there is no real drone at motorway speeds - a little more noticeable at lower speeds but it does have a nice deep burble to it, a bit less harsh sounding than a Wortec.......in my opinion.

As before my Walkinshaw Performance exhaust does drone at ~1600-2000 ish rpm which is about 65-75 mph in my manual LS3.
The drone is on throttle, it is not bad at all if you are on the flat or downhill at those speeds but going up hill and trying to maintain those speeds there is more load on the engine and more drone.
I dont do much long distance driving so its not much of an issue for me. We will have to meet up again and maybe go up the A1 a bit to get a better idea.
But from what Davegreg says you auto might be a bit different

I've had both the Wortec and Walkinshaw systems (with Wortec headers) on my LS3 VXR8. The Wortec did not drone at all, at any speeds. It was near silent when cruising but quite high pitched and raspy when accelerating. The Walky Supercar cat-back I have on now does drone quite a bit, especially around 70mph in sixth. But it's well worth it for the deeper, bassier exhaust note.

I'd like to seek a ride in someone's auto with Wilko or Wortec exhaust to try to gauge for myself. I'll push for that when the weather warms up and there are more people out and about.
I'm at Monkish now and will have some suspension parts to pay for before I leave today. Looks like 4 tyres will be needed very soon too (I thought the rears were getting low), but knackered ball joint and top suspension mount has scrubbed inside fronts too. So, the credit card will be hit this month
Ha ha, will probably be asking about tyre choices on this forum. I've used Falken 452 previously and will probably go for the 453 this time.

At 60 MPH it returns to a lovely V8 noise that isn't too loud, then at 80 MPH (where local law permitted) it oddly goes far quieter than either. Wish the UK Gov would hurry up and raise the NSL to 80, but that's a discussion for another topic

That's resonance for you; it will peak at a certain frequency, and fall off above/below that frequency. Here, frequency is engine speed.FoxdieUK said:

Or you could knock the car into 5th, and cruise at 70 without the noise.

At 70th in 5th it doesn't quite drone as much, but it kicks out a lot more noise at the rear, most likely distracting other drivers.Well, it's what they're made for, right? right??
