The thing is, these lower placed clubs have to over pay wages etc to persuade players to go there, instead of going to the big boys near the top of the table..biggrin

Is it? We paid £30M for Rio 12 years ago & he's ended up playing 400+ games for Utd.

Indeed.

There have been a few big money defensive buys over the years.

Absolute garbage, Players go where the money is, The only reason they go to a lesser club is that they are obviously not good enough & will get regular first team bonuses , thats why all the best players play for the biggest clubs. Too suggest that lesser clubs pay more in wages is pure poppycock.

Will be interesting to see how Moyes plays Kroos then. Will he cover for Rafael or Evra?

Such rash generalisation; how many players actually want honours and feel the 100k a week is enough? If Kroos, for example, was offered 100k a week by Man City plus the lure of CL football, Man Utd would have to offer more to compensate the season (at least) where they will not feature in the CL.

Of course, there are the greedy s who would play football for Saddam Hussein FC if it meant an extra 10k a week on top of the 100k they are already earning.

I thought I read somewhere that Moyes was to get 100m in the Summer, surely spending 30m on a defender is not leaving him much to spend on re-building the team.

Breaking news: defenders no longer part of the team according to Sky Sources.

A good point - and their collective wage bill will be well in excess of what you need to pay a £30M player.

Yep...and I'd think he's pretty happy picking that up. Can't see any club matching that offer, can you?

He's got two years left on his deal. He'll stay one more IMO & then Utd will sell him for what they can get & subsidise his wages for a further year if necessary. He'll be off the wage bill in two years IMO.
