Shame football is not about passing it backwards and sideways.

3-5-2 is just useless with the players we have, there is no width when the defenders get the ball,so they only have the middle to play through ,if each player is marked we end up going sideways and backwards ,the play is so slow it allows the opposition all the time to organize.
When the wing backs attack, there is no support ,the frontmen don't go wide and there is no overlapping fullback as you would get in442.
I'm also puzzled as to why when playing with 2 upfront ,neither striker goes to the front post when the ball is wide ,about half our crosses don't make it past the front post ,yet both forwards make runs to the back post and central goal area.

Simple fact is best performances have been with 4 at the back .

And let's not take anything away from villa ,it was a shocking red card ,they defended well and the goal was a stunner ,He's a quality player benteke.

It was barely 2 upfront yesterday Frankie, I lost count of the bloody number of times Falcao and RVP either ran into each other or made the same run into the same space. Bit more work needed. But delighted to see Falcao get one. I hope it's the first in a glut of gaols!

I not sure he's happy playing young as full back hence the back five with Rafa and Shaw nearly back perhaps we'll see that back four against Newcastle. They were pretty toothless today.

I realise we're still pretty rubbish but I'm starting to wonder where the challenge is going to come from for 3rd/4th this year?

Well, Brendan over at Anfield reckons they're looking good for top 4

You won't find any manager of any club with top four ambitions saying anything otherwise at this early stage of the season!

So with no European games and no more Carling Cup games, what team will Utd put out in the FA Cup? Something guaranteed* to get through against a lower league team, or giving the kids a go .... ?

In the event that Utd don't get top four - and two or three results could swing it either way for a variety of teams - a Cup win or at least a final is the least LvG should expect, surely.

* nothing is guaranteed - I think it'll be a mix - ala CC

From the Dutch Masters' press conference today it would seem the move for Rooney into a midfield play maker with box to box capabilities has begun. If that means more game time for Falcao, RVP, ADM and Wilson alongside him then bring it on.

Great to see Gutierrez make a comeback this week. Having had cancer rip the heart out of my family this year I wish him all the best but not for Boxing Day!!

Happy Christmas chaps, the double is still on. Very tough tie against the mighty Yeovil is a big hurdle though!!!!

Who here is at OT on Boxing Day?

Our forward line looks better than our defence and the Toon are just off their best now.

I'm thinking 2-1?

I think with a lot of these historically mid-team teams it depends whether they still see OT as fortress OT or not and how much they want to come and 'ave a go ...

West Ham and Everton both did earlier in the season and arguably should have got a draw in each case - dodgy off-side and De Gea's brilliance giving Utd the points ...

Does Pardew want to come and play and go for the win or just come for a point and hope to nick a goal? History says the latter ...

QPR and Hull never even came for the second option did they - they just hoped not to concede. Swansea came and had a go and reaped the rewards ...

Any results other than a home win is always treated like a loss to Utd fans, you can't win EVERY match ...

Pardew is talking about playing a counter attacking game. Much could depend on Carrick keeping possession. We cannot win all our home games but it would to win the ones I get to. Ten hours out including the game for me so I cannot go too often.

yes

Great goal

Also enjoyed DeGea making a good save and immediately screaming at the defence, he's really grown.

Enjoyed that. Hope Falcao is fit now, although he didn't today he does look very good. Rooney superb and Ashley Young, wow he is looking great at the moment.
