Well this seems to have met a mixed reaction. The Road Haulage Association call it madness and Brake say it could easily lead to tragedy. So presumably they think drivers will take a nice long drive to Beaconsfield, just to use a new Wetherspoons on the M40 and get hammered..

What do others think?

peoples tolerances to alcohol differ 1 and a half pints of 4% beer or lager is about the maximum you can have as a guideline. Some people I know are happy to drive on 2 pints of beer and they think there ok. there lies the problem.

The pub will e popular with fans visiting Wembley for events.

Anyone driven in France or Germany! Alcohol has been available for ever!
Mind you they have loads more rest areas where you can rest without being pressurised to enjoy the shopping experience!

It is true that a pub on the motorway might encourage people to indulge in an extra pint whilst having something to eat just before driving. Said that, in many rest areas there already are shops that sell alcohol. If anyone really wants to drink knowing they'll be driving no one will stop them, they'll find a way to do it.
As I read on BBC (sorry can't find the link) that area is also served by local roads so it's not just for the motorway but for local people as well...

No-one is forcing drivers to drink.

why are we constantly assumed by various busybodies to have the self control of small children when this type of issue is raised?

Really? Have you actually thought about it? There is an M&S at the services you can buy alcohol from as well as 6 pubs within half mile. The next junction of the motorway houses a Tescos where you can stock up on 10 bottles of Vodka before jumping straight back on the motorway if you wanted, perhaps this should be shut down too?

When a coachload or 5 coachloads of people stop there and pile in they totally clog the place up and queues get rediculous, this is a great way to combat that and add extra capacity as well as all these people being able to stop for a pint if they want one.

If people want to drink drive then there are loads of ways going about with plenty of sources of local alcohol before this was opened.

rofl Yes really, its less than 2 miles from my house.

Its not the only one either, has been happening for years.

Either your link is out of date, wrong, too difficult to comprehend by normal people due the their awkward way of explaining things and so misleading you or M&S and hundreds of other retailers and petrol stations across the country are flouting the law.

All this waffling on about a "Motorway Pub" fails to note that the pub is accessible by non Motorway traffic since the services at Beaconsfield are built by junction 2 on the A355.

Would love the idea of Motorway pubs. Mostly for the pub chips & a small glass of wine!

There is no difference with a pub on a motorway than a country pub with a large car park,or any other pub with a car park for that matter. Its the idiots who drink and drive that are the problem, and they can get booze anywhere.

Aren't all pubs at the side of the road? Isn't that how we get to them? What's the difference between a pub beside a fast A road and a pub at a motorway service station?

Just a load of mumsnet whinging.

Absolutely this. I cant think of any pub I have been in which isn't at the side of a road. Who cares . If people want to drink and drive they will. What a storm in a teacup.

If you were on a road trip with some pals it would be a good break to stop and have a pint and a pub lunch and be on your way!

Only irresponsible drivers will drink and drive and they could easily purchase alcohol before they join the motorway!

What do others think?

If you're on a coach trip and stopping for a break its ideal. I don't see what the big fuss is about.

First chance I had......drank multiple pints then my co driver drove us away. She was, naturally, free of alcohol. Imagine the distress............

Not the best idea..

Some people will not be as responsible as the government hope!

It'll only take one accident for it to be closed down methinks

Although I do think it's a good idea, drink driving easily avoidable!
