At a guess I think that the polo will weigh around 1190kg in this guise with DSG a bit less for without DSG.

Found this by (and this is a guess), the difference between a 1.4tsi DSG 3dr Golf and the 3dr Golf R DSG is 160kg, so a polo in 1.4 DSG guise weighs just 1029 KG so with the 160kg added weight should weigh about 1190 Kg so about 210 BHP/ton

Not bad,

If it is just a detuned golf r engine, should see a healthy 300bhp with just a map(possibly more because i bet the Golf engine could see 340-350BHP before hardware needs changing) So in that case its a golf r - 100kgs (Polo R Plus) wink

Re: The power output. After some internet mining I've found that the Polo R will not make 250hp in the production car as it will have exactly the same engine as the Golf Gti with the performance pack and the 2014 Audi S1: 230ps/227hp. I'm sure you can swap a larger intercooler, turbo and injectors onto it and get it mapped for 340hp. biggrin Seems that just like the last Golf VAG will launch the Audi S1 this year and the Polo R next year and they will be the same car but the Polo R will be slightly cheaper with a slightly cheaper looking interior and image. I imagine the S1 will cost about 27K when it's launched and the Polo R will be a few thousand cheaper in 2015.
Also even though I think myself and others are being a bit cynical about these new cars (WHAT! PISTONHEADS BEING CYNICAL! MIND BLOWN!) I think that we can all agree another little performance car with potential is a good thing.
where did you get this info from as its stated "It will use the EA888 2.0-litre turbo from the Golf GTI and R" and thats the new golf R.. so wont be that much variance in the hardware if its gonna be cheaper than a golf GTI as they wont have spent the R&D desinging a "less powerful" engine i presume it will just be software different

The Polo GTI with the 1.4 TSI engine is 1270kg not 1029kg...

No. You're thinking of the Mk1.

I know. I had one.

The 8P S3 and Mk6 Golf R were far superior in every aspect. Steering feel, performance, looks, interior comfort, everything.
Yep. 8Ps were very good. The 8P won Sport Auto's AWD comparison test in the snow/wet, beat out all the competition in its day in most reviews, and Sport Auto's time for the 8P on Hockenheim is actually faster than the new model -- which surprised me.

Sorry was looking a the non TSI Polo :L

Silly me.

but dont get why a polo GTI weighs 70kg more than a Golf with the same engine, if this is the case the polo will end up weighing more than the golf
R :S i hope its weight is under 1300kg but looks unlikely now.... unless they use carbon pannels (highly unlikely)

I popped into my local VW dealer this morning to enquire about orders a d was told they are not making one. Is this the usual case of enthusiasts knowing more than the sales staff, or have they really canned it?

They can't seem to make up their mind. I asked VW UK last week and they wouldn't confirm or deny whether its coming.

I think either way they want to unveil a GTI version of the facelift Polo first then this would follow later so realistically if it does come along it won't be until end of 2014 or early 2015.

Audi S1 on the other hand is fully confirmed and coming to the UK shortly so that might be the better bet.

Yeah, but for me the (admittedly rather tenuous) WRC link is part of the appeal. As one who mourned the passing of the road-going rally rep I feel that when a currently competing manufacturer builds something like this it should be supported.

I'm guessing it's currently blocked until the new GTI lands. Maybe we'll hear something at the Paris motorshow

Looking forward to an update on this...

Assume they want to shift a few S1s first and all the Golf Rs they can to avoid cannibalising those markets?

An Up! GT R would probably be the sweet spot for my run around needs but I doubt they'll even do a GTi version (though the GT is coming) of that frown

The Auto Express article was reckoning Sept/Oct launch, their crystal ball must be bust. Not heard a whisper since, is it still going ahead?

Still a bit of hope yet as the new Polo GTI has only just been unveiled and the R was always going to come out after the GTI, so they might just be holding it back a few months.

Is there actually a real market for these? I was looking for a GTI ~6 months ago and no dealers wanted to know, they all said they didn't sell many, they don't get many part-ex etc...

will probably be another year if the GTi has just been launched, VAG like to space out stuff to have a constant media "drip" of cars

it would be an ideal upgrade for the OHs polo GTi thou
