do we think we'll ever see Whitmarsh or Domenicalli again in F1.

Or anywhere motorsport related for that matter.

Personally Whitmarsh will go back to other engineering areas. He was headhunted from BAE way back when.

Stefano will likely surface again at another brand in something like Rallying or Touring Cars perhaps if there's an Italian Le mans team. IMO

Why would they need to be an Italian team? I think both would go where the challenge is. Or retire and enjoy life.

Mad to think that both SD and MW have over 20 years experiance each in top level motorsport, with lead teams.

Ron is no better or worse than MW.

Ferraris issues run deeper than SD.

If I were a sponsor, I would see Ron running the team as a more likely prospect as a return to form than Martin W. Don't misunderstand me, I like the way MW always handled himself, and Ron doesn't share that same open style, but to say one is no better or worse than the other is not how I see it for sure.

On what do you base that statement? Results? Business acumen? Or maybe hirsuteness? If the latter, I'd contend that actually MW is better than RD in that regard.

I mean from pure results perspective.

Other than the early Lewis years, which the first season was a mis managed mess - to the point where Alonso will not return with RD at the helm, RD blew a lot of good oppourtunites.

Andrian N. a prime example. Kimi, Montoya, Alonso etc.

Anyway, hope both teams get back onto their feet and challenge Merc/RB.

Who's to blame at McLaren for making their livery look like a back-of-grid team due to lack of sponsorship?

Depends. McLaren are looking for circa $40m a year, with a 5 year span, roughly $2m per race. If they took $1m per race for say 8 races, they've just lost $8m, but if they then sign up a title sponsor (eg. Rakuten), they are better off in the long run than if they'd signed up a sponsor for $25m for 3 or 4 years.

Only time will tell if the strategy will work, but Ron's been doing this since the late 60s so perhaps he's got a better perspective of it than any of us.

What I don't understand (and never have) is why McLaren don't put "McLaren" on the bloody car. I know the logo is on the very front, but it's tiny.

Do any of the teams have their name plastered over the cars? Pretty sure they all have a logo but iirc the only team I see the name on is Marussia?

It's more cost-effective to have a sponsor on it, I guess, but it is a good point.

Mercedes do highlight the Merc-ness of their car quite prominently, as do Ferrari.

You'd think that whilst they're light on sponsors, McLaren would promote themselves more.

Maybe it's because Mercedes and Ferrari have a more identifiable logo, rather than a name.

Well Ferrari and Mercedes have logos everywhere. However, both are more marketable than McLaren's logo. Red Bull has Red Bull all over it as you would expect. Caterham have 'Caterham' on the side of the nose. Lotus have 'Lotus' on the top of the nose among other places. Marussia have 'Marussia' on the rear wing. Force India have 'Force India' on the side pod. Sauber have 'Sauber F1 Team' on the rear wing.

So Toro Rosso and Williams don't really have their team identity all over them, but the clues are there on Toro Rosso at least.

McLaren have very few sponsors this year and a sparse livery - why not actually identify the car as a McLaren in some way.

At the moment it's the "Mobil 1 SAP Gulf Air Esso ASOS Mercedes F1 Team".

Apparently Gillette sponsor them now, but that doesn't seem to have appeared.

Pretty much all they are missing is a title sponsor. This is obviously no small thing, but as previously discussed its a calculated risk by Ron based on his experience.

Just read that Ron The Don is trying to seal the deal on Huawei as title sponsor.

Interesting. One of the plausible contenders for the title sponsor was Rakuten (japanese version of Amazon, owns play.com) - but I know that Ron Dennis was in China with David Cameron in December as part of the trade delegation. Huawei were there.

Hrmm.

Unrelated, but apparently Honda and McLaren will be exclusive not just for 2015 but also for 2016. I wonder what that engine will turn out like...
