My car started making an odd knocking noise 2 weeks ago at around 3-4k rpm. I took it into the dealer and they told me it sounded like a big end bearing on its way out.
They stripped the engine & found the fault to be a blocked oil injector which had caused oil starvation on cylinder number 5 & lead to bearing failure. I'm glad I've kept up the BMW warranty. Without it they said the bill would be around £8,000. They will be replacing the crankshaft, all big end bearings, piston rings. Probably other bits, I'm not an expert.

The car is a 2007, 65k miles, not tuned, and doesn't have a hard life.

The service manager showed me round the car as it was yesterday.

Loan car until it's fixed. A nice drive

Ouch. Who'd run a modern BMW without a warranty? Glad they're sorting it for you, any idea how long it will take?

I dropped it in on the 10th. The parts only arrived Thursday from Germany as they needed it stripped down 1st to establish what to order. They estimate by Tuesday evening to put it back together so maybe I'll be able pick it up Wednesday.
I did ask if it would be cheaper to fit a new engine but apparently they cost around £13k.

Wow. Terrible bad luck OP, glad the warranty is coming through for you.

Is this the first problem you have had or is this just the latest thing to go wrong with it?

How much do long service intervals have to do with issues like this?

not the 1st problem no. I bought the car in June 2012. Since then it's had the following done under warranty

2012: Vacuum hose on a turbo split resulting in engine management light on, a minor problem though really

2013: Oil filter housing was leaking from where it joins up to the engine block- new housing fitted

2013: Air conditioning condenser had corroded and was blowing out white powder from the vents- New condenser fitted, from reading the forums a common fault on the condenser used in 2007 model year 3 series.

2013: Automatic seat belt extender stopped extending- replaced

I think that's the worst of it, without reading all the receipts anyway. Suffice to say I will keep the warranty running!

I know the feeling! Small bits of dirt into the turbo, stray bolt rolling into a manifold etc.

I've had my 335i for coming up to 18 months with no warranty. Threads like this do make my bum twitch a bit though! smile

335i now 6 years old, owned it for the last 2.5 years, no warranty, and would never consider one. Wouldn't trust my local BMW dealer to change the oil let alone attempt a full on rebuild, hope if all gets sorted, pictures look very scary....cylinder heads on bit of cardboard..the camshaft doesn't even get the cardboard treatment, glad to see the floor is nice and clean!!

Surprised they never put a short block in. They have to warrant the build for 2 years do they not?

Looking at the T&C the warranty continues to be valid under their comprehensive cover until 100k miles. This will be a good few years for me with current annual mileage.
I'm enjoying the mini cooper s. Its not as quick but the handling is excellent.

Call me a miserable bd but I'm going to predict you'll end up with a new/recon engine.
Storing the crank and most of your induction system directly on the workshop floor does not bode well for a successful rebuild.
Unless the cardboard being used for conrod storage along with 'bolts, miscellaneous' is actually an Approved part?

The crankshaft is one of the parts the will be replacing so not bothered about that being on the floor. I would of thought they could have put the other parts in a tray though. As someone mentioned above a stray nut into the turbos wouldn't be good. In any case if they put it back together, test it & it goes bang they can fix it again!

The EML on mine used to come on after a hard drive. Letting the engine cool for a while would see it turn itself off again, but I used to cack myself thinking of the potential bills. Lost confidence in it in the end and chopped it in.
Can't believe yours is sat there on some cardboard.

Mine too. So far avoided the warranty on my 335i touring but finally caved in after seeing this. £330 per year isn't all that bad to stop said buttocks twitching!

I picked the car up this afternoon. All fixed, sounds and drives as it should. I have been taking it easy. I did ask if it would need running it but was told it wouldn't. Not sure about this.

If its got a new crank and shells in it, i would suggest it a good idea, and an oil change at 1k miles.

Threads like this make me glad I stayed sensible and just got a 3 litre straight 6 rather than the blown version.

BMW warranty definitely worth it and they seem to be one of the best out there for actually doing the work that needs doing rather than trying to wiggle out of it.
