So if you found you had one of these, what would you build?

Out of interest, what would you spec for running gear, would you build a race car or road car? Its a T car chassis so longer wheelbase than standard M and wider too...

I would find out if it would be eligible to run in the same series as its sibling, if finished the same way.

Road or race, I'd build it with a 4-bolt main SBF V8. The cost difference, for the block, may be substantial, but is a minor percentage of a finished engine. I would also build it with a dry sump system, and use a multi-plate clutch, with a small steel scattershield (less poking out under the car/better underbody aero).

If the added wheelbase allowed for routing the exhausts out in front of the footwells, I'd use side exhausts.

Best,
B.

For the engine, don't go it lumby US V8 route imho. Go for a light but powerfull 6 cylinder setup, TVR speed6 falls in mind as an obvious option or perpahs a BMW M3 R6. The BMW one beeing quite cheap, with many gearbox options. A supercharged V6 could allso be interesting, eg a F type engine.
If you want more power is the BMW V8 M3 engine avaliable with manual gearboxes, and delivering 420 hp without any mods. Jaguar XKR could also be an option, but I dont know if there are manual gearbox option avaliable.

LS engine..... for a lightweight sports car.... I simply miss the point of adding 460 lbs in the front of the car and getting way too mutch low end torque to make the car drivable in normal road conditions :-) but for sure will be a scary thing.

speed 6 and Ls weight damn near same.....and as its a much shorter engine, you can pull it back closer to bulkhead, and as the top is plastic, cog doesn't go high, fitted with a dry sump and plate clutch can be fitted with same crank line, fit a high lift cam, the vv low end tq shifts up the revs.....

whats not to like?

but op, if that were in my garage, it'd get a SBF

I sold my SBF for a Ls..... Worked out cheaper, lighter and stronger

The vag 3.2 is a naughty revvy little engine and very compact!

Cast iron heads, I suspect? Only referring to the "lighter" part.

I'd go for BMW M3 3.2l 6 cylinder engine. Utterly amazing, cheap as chips, sounds fantastic, smooth and mid gear will out drag any V8. Even the 2.5l M52 6 cylinder will leave a 2.9l V6 S2 dead once rolling.

Block and intake, plus they don't like to be revved hard, lots of story's of the blocks splitting in half with out girdles I'm talking about the 302 as the 351 is quite a lot wider

I really wanted to use it but the sums weren't adding up frown

First decide what you're going to use it for.
Race car use - I would go V8 as the Wheeler car, road car similar.

I've a friend who rebuild lots of dbf for various original racing fords, gt40, cobras etc... some of the revs I've seen on dyne and performance of them is crazy..
perhaps a little too caky for road use, but they definitely can be built to rev.

Over optimistic spec, or just a heavy right foot?

Either way, I'm not sure it'd be a good experience to have that happen when driving!

cheers

I did think to use the vag vr6 in my tvr m project but to drive the cam timing electronics can be very involved ie expensive also the rwd gearbox would have been fun ?? So I just tried the 3.2 evo and it fitted like a glove. It's also lighter than a griff v8 engine judging buy the fount ride hight with standard shocks. Or it may be it just further back as i tucked it very tight to the bulkhead , any way it should go well. Richard.

LS3 418 lbs.

Windsor short deck ~450 lbs. Subtract for Aluminium heads = 420 lbs.

I'd say that's not an insufferable weight difference, beyond that, the packaging of a V8 allows for the CG to be set back further than an I6. Also, I6s don't typically weigh less than V8s!!! Contemplate their respective Architecture, and you'll know why.

Ford Windsor production (short deck) blocks are safe to rev into the high 7s, if built for it, and can support as much as 550HP at the crank. When more is needed, use a 4-bolt block.

I'm not saying it's the only engine out there, but if you want to build a clone of the PW mock sham 5000M clone, you'll likely have to get pretty close in spec, in order to be allowed entry into the same club, without too many questions.

I'm under the impression that car has a tall block Windsor. That's what I'd look into. I'd also research the exact engine spec, for that motor, and duplicate much of it, if that's what it takes to be able to race it.

If you can't race the car, IMHO, it has little value. It should make a great racer, but I imagine it would be a fairly useless street car. At least, I'd hate to be charged with having to turn it into one.

Best,
B.

What's a "T" car chassis? do you mean t350? and what about the body, is it from the same moulds as the Pete Wheeler wide body 5000m?
