OP, if you're buying an M6 buy an AUC car with a full BMW warranty. Two years can also be negotiated as well. I got 2 years on mine FOC after threatening to walk away from the deal.

Many third party warranties will require an excess of around £250.00 or so every time you have to make a claim. Great if you have something big that needs doing but for little jobs or frequent claims these bills will add up.

Personally from experience, I would never buy an M car without the warranty.

Purely opinion and nothing to do with performance: although the xkr is lovely, if not a poor mans Aston Martin, it is a Jag. For those who enjoy werthers originals. Bmw is a bit harsh for long journeys and the new gen 6 series is so much better it's would nag at me. I am going to be in a similar predicament to you in 6 months and have given up trying to decide what to get. I hope to get some inspiration from your thread, thanks OP. Bizarrely I thought today about an R32 as I was cut up by one on the way home. smile.
Never been in an "E63 6 series" but I've been in an M6 and when you say the BMW is harsh for long journeys I'm going to COMPLETELY disagree with you. They are amongst the most comfortable cars I've ever been in.

My dad has a new M6 as well as technically yes, it's a far better car but in many ways I preferred the V10 model.

I have a BMW 650i and I'm quite surprised folks don't think the M6 'feels fast' in everyday driving. Even my lowly 650 feels stupidly fast if you want it to....and it's also v comfortable on a long journey. I drove it all the way to the Italian Lakes last year and it's very comfortable.

I'd have an M6 - I think the 6 series looks fabulous. Biased, obviously.

If the price is right then an AUC car with 2 years warranty could be well worth it. However I wouldn't discount non-AUC cars, you can always get the BMW Mondial warranty which is basically the same, you just take it to a dealer and there's no need to claim money back, etc. Can specify a zero excess if you want (will be more expensive obviously), but just be aware that prices double after 60k miles.

Again it all depends on price and condition, I bought my E60 M5 privately in very good condition, clutch replaced recently and all the common faults corrected for about £4-5k less than a similar AUC car. Took out a Mondial warranty for £88 a month with £250 excess.

The looks thing is obviously subjective. I think the XKR is beautiful whereas I find the M6 good looking at the front but a complete dogs dinner at the rear. (People will see lots of the rear view in either car!)

I have the XKR 5.0 and its a wonderful thing, I get nice comments from strangers all the time. Regarding the gearbox I'd say the down changes can be quite jerky.

I strongly recommend that you buy a Jaguar approved car - the warranty is fantastic. These are complex cars and if you are buying one that's a few years old then there's a good chance that you will use that warranty. Mine is now over 4 years old and in the past 18 months its been in twice for alarm problems, it's had a oil leak, rear parking sensors and new alternator.

The Jaguar warranty also covers the touchscreen system and most aftermarket ones do not.

The XKR, to my eyes, just looks more graceful. M6 a bit more focussed, crisper lines making it look like it should be faster and more responsive (mind you, I've never driven an M6! biggrin)

Only thing that would really influence me in your position is, don't the E63 V10 M6s have the same caramel clutch that the E60 M5s did? More a question of when than if?

We're probably going for the V10 M6 convertible this year. Personally I think it's an ugly brute of a car, but I like the V10. Apart from a casual rebellion against cross-plane V8s I'm in the middle of, we'd prefer the looks of the XKR every time but the rear seats are worse than the Cerbera's in coupe form and a total waste of space in the convertible - and we do need to be able to fit children in reasonable comfort for GT use.

So long as I walk up the M6 blind folded it ticks all other boxes - great sound (i.e. not a cross plane V8, for a change), an engine that rewards revs, good handling, convertible for nice days with plenty space in the back for child seats. It'll be my wife's daily driver so the rear space is a major driver - but she's just pig sick of saloon cars and wants something different/special feeling.

If the clutch release bearing hasn't been changed then yes. However I don't there's many reports of premature clutch wear after it's been changed though.

Well, I thought I had made up my mind and was going for the XKR, until... I went and tested one on Friday and I didn't fit into it. Really gutted. I'm 6'4 - my knees rubbed the wheel and my head touched the roof. I'm really disappointed as I had set my heart on one...
I need to test the M6 now but since there are none for sale near where I live, I drove a 635d yesterday to make sure I fitted in, and I really liked the interior and driving position of the '6. I was actually really impressed with the diesel engine having had petrol for the last 7/8 years, so might actually consider the diesel! I'll shortly be getting a fuel card so consumption isn't a concern, but it was a nice place to be, and probably looks a bit less 'look at me' than the m6. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for one to test though, as I'm willing to wait a bit to make sure I make the right decision.
Thanks for all the replies so far.

Did you have a proper play with the seating and steering column positions? I'm 6' 1" and have plenty of headroom and legroom. I met a couple of other XKR owners through jaguarforum.co.uk who are significantly taller than me and have no issues either...

The M6 will average ~220/tank (it's only 15.5 gals). While your mpg may not bother you, the frequency of trips to the petrol station might. Oh, and try to seek out one with full leather rather than extended or individual, it makes the interior a much nicer place. Finally, forget the auto part of the box, do manual changes and lift off during change.

Could always opt for a 650i if the running costs of an M6 are too frightening. Lovely engine, would suit the 6 very well I think.

Just to bring some closure to this thread...

After test driving lots of cars, and reading forums for the last few weeks, I decided to go for the Jaguar. Since there were very few XKR's around where I live, and I needed a car fairly quickly, I've 'settled' for a regular XK, with a view to upgrading to the XKR at some point if I like it. Everyone keeps telling me it's an old mans car (I'm 32) but I don't see it like that. I think it looks refreshingly different amongst all the BMW's and Audis around. I've already had a few nice comments about it from strangers and haven't even had it 24 hours yet.

Thanks to everyone who contributed and gave advice. I'm going out for a drive smile

Very nice indeed. Would have been my choice, I fell in love with the interior a few years back. Very special place to sit whilst smashing up the motorways or cruising through town.

Lovely wheels on that bad boy too!

Thanks, yes I much prefer the wheels on this one than some of the others I looked at. We even managed to squeeze a baby seat in, but had to go for one that sits sideways across the back 'seats'.

I had actually written of the XK as a no go, as I didn't fit into the convertible, but the hard top has more room in it so I'm glad I gave it another chance and sat in one.
