There is a junction on the A5 at Weedon where if you approach to cross the A5 from the M1 towards Daventry on the A45 it is possible to take the left hand filter lane to head South on the A5 and then immediately do a U turn then taking the left filter lane again to continue along the A45 having avoided waiting at the traffic lights.
My son was stopped by the BIB after pulling this manoeuvre although they did not do anything other than check his car etc. etc. and this is probably because I have set a bad example by doing the same myself at this particular junction smile

I would not pull this move during a driving test, advanced or otherwise because it stinks of impatience and may be seen as "queue jumping" by other drivers but what are others views on "making progress" in this way??

Even if not illegal, it will be seen as poor form, you know this as you wouldn't do it on test !

Lots of advanced driving is seen as poor form by less competent drivers but that doesn't make it wrong.

I'm not sure I think that is true Simon, if you are using so called "advanced techniques" and leaving others thinking you are doing something poorly, then I think you're doing something wrong.

If it's legal, it's legal.

You never had a driver in front react to your positioning on the off side of the road to get a good view before an overtake?

I don't think so Simon.

For me you were "thinking" and using all available road space, provided it's safe i don't see it as a problem. there are signs on the roads for drivers to "Use both lanes" when "merging".....yet most don't and get offended when you do.....that's their problem for not reading the road....not yours.

I personally wouldn't do a U turn so close to a traffic light controlled junction, but I would go and do a loop of the Bridge street triangle of grass to do my turn. Only really worth it if your saving a considerable amount of time sitting at a red light.

Not necessarily so. If others think you are doing something poorly, the error may lie in the perception of the onlooker, not in the driver's actions.

Whilst I would never deliberately do anything to aggravate/annoy or endanger another road user I have nervelessness annoyed a couple of other drivers by performing perfectly safe and, in my view, legitimate overtakes that inconvenienced no one. But, I'm sure that the overtaken drivers who flashed me after I'd gone past thought, (and by flashing their lights tried to tell me), that I was a reckless, maniacal, boy (if only) racer who deserved to crash at the next bend!
