I had this tonight. The diesel pump seemed to be pumping air and it was farting. Told the attendant and said put it back and start again so it did it carried on rising even though the pump was put back.

I then changed pumps and put around 15 quid in taking my total spend to nearly £33 when it should have been around £20 for just 91 miles.

My taxi should do 25-26 mpg and i think putting that much in means its running around 15-16 mpg which is rubbish.

Anyway i paid it as i was not sure of the law here and was told to see the manager tomorrow which I will. What can i reasonably expect ? This was the BP station on Sutton Road, Maidstone.

if they've recognised it as a faulty pump , i would imagine they would give you goodwill of some sort , maybe a few bob for the trouble caused.

I'd say you shouldn't have to pay for the fuel from the first pump as it was clearly faulty and you didn't get what you paid for. It appears to be a small amount anyway so a good will gesture for a few quid seems reasonable.

Don't get carried away with calling trading standard/weights and measures etc until the manager has had his say. Did you get the attendants name or get him to record the event in a diary/fault log etc? Did they take that pump out of service?

I got his name and he admitted there was a fault so I assume he took it out of service. I took multiple photos of the situation including one of my dash showing the days milage. Not after any freebie but I do expect something back.

The fuel's under pressure the other side of the valve - which is in the nozzle. The pump measures the amount of fuel going through to the nozzle.

Before you picked it up, the air in the hose was compressed to the pressure of the fuel. When you closed the nozzle, the air in the hose was uncompressed - but was then compressed by the fuel coming through behind it. The pressure was the same, so the amount of compression of the fuel in the hose was the same before and after - so you probably got the amount of fuel you were charged for.

To the exact same level in the tank? How do you know?

Apart from the fact that you cannot even remotely calculate fuel consumption other than full-tank to full-tank (and I don't believe your taxi has a tank that only holds £20-30 worth), what the flamin' 'eck are you cabbing in that's so thirsty...? Are you trying to make a profit or what?
