Removing scuffs from glass
Discussion
Hey all
Purchased a new (to me) car yesterday, obligatory picture:
Absolutely chuffed with the car, only a few little things I'd like to sort out, there's a scuff on the screen where it would seem someone activated the wipers with no blade, the glass isn't deeply scratched but it's left a 5-10mm swept scuff
Would like to remove it, but not sure if regular "glass polish" would be up to the task, would I need something more specialised? I have a drill mounted kit that I've used to remove small scratches from paintwork with great success, I was intending to use the same kit with glass polish to have a go at this one
Any thoughts?

You'd need something more aggressive than ordinary glass polish such as this kit. You may find (especially using a drill rather than the more easily controlled rotary polisher) that the process introduces optical distortions into the glass however, which can be more distracting than the original scratch.
For side and rear windows it's not such an issue, but for windscreens I'd be more inclined towards replacement of the screen from a good independent company - or at least budget for one before starting.

Thanks for the replies guys
I've driven the car again since and the scuff is really much less serious than I first described, more like 3-5mm at its widest, and not even felt under a finger nail
Hopefully toothpaste will do it, that would be awesome, if not I'll look into something a bit more serious

I'm interested to hear how you get on with toothpaste. Being 55 years old the glass on my classic is obviously pitted but remarkably not scratched. I really don't want to replace the glass so I've been looking at glass polishing kits on the internet. Some seem to have silicon and other abrasives in them but of toothpaste does it maybe that's the way to go?
Get your insurance company to replace it as you have a crack in it if you no what i mean, any type of glass polish might make it look like the marks gone but when driving at night on coming cars with there head lights on will just make the screen look like its been rubbed over which a brilow pad.

The best advise I can give anyone don't buy a cheap DIY kit as it won't work and you will waste your money, pay a professional to do the work .
