Hi all
Just wondering if anyone had made a stainless steel or similar plate to cover the top of the exhaust manifold in the engine bay to divert the heat? I thought this could be a neat solution to the heat on the bonnet issues. I'm thinking a long plate with a neat edge running along side the cam cover.
Pics would be great if anyone has done this successfully.
Thanks in advance,

Andy.

No experience of your suggested approach but..

Rather than keeping the heat from the Speed 6 manifold contained close to the block (and possibly raising engine temps), the Tamora bonnet has slats to let it out.

If you were unlucky and didn't buy a Tamora, then I am sure that 5 minues work on the bonnet with some saws could lead to improved cooling in that area of the engine bay.

Or the wrapping / coating manifold approach could help, but I am guessing you want a less-involved fix.

I can't say I have heard of anybody making or fitting such a thing to a SP6.

There are a few guys who have had the manifolds coated in some sort of product to reduce heat I can't remember what it is called at the moment thoughscratchchin

And some have wrapped the manifolds to reduce engine temperature also.

I've got the coating.... ummhhh forget the name as I don't want to shame.... not sure my life or the under bonnet temps were changed that much as a result of the wallet lightening.

Lots of views on wrapping and things but generally the heat goes somewhere so if you keep the manifolds toasty the gearbox and floor under your legs gets more radiant heat. My current project will get high temp paint, if it were a track car I'd probably wrap.

I don't really want to take the manifolds off to ceramic coat them and I've heard bad things about wrapping them because the heat is contained inside the wrap.
I just thought a stainless plate would still let the heat out (and soak some up) and would potentially look cleaner and more tidy than seeing the old manifold itself. I'm not sure if the usual bit of mat glued to the underside of the bonnet would work as well or look as appealing.

Hi Andy,

A cost and time effective alternative to your stainless plate solution is simply to purchase a large (it comes in 3 sizes) strip of Zircotec insulation sheet (the self adhesive type) and stick this to the underside of the bonnet above the exhaust manifolds. I have just done this recently and the effect is immediately noticeable and impressive. The bonnet is no longer hot to the touch after running in traffic or similar. I thought I might need a double layer but 1 seems to have done the trick. And I did find it very straight forward to trim the Zircotec sheet to size and install (half hour job).

Btw, a good number of us have wrapped the exhausts without any problems (including myself) so not sure what bad things you've heard?

I'm read somewhere about the heat build up causing the manifolds to crack around the welds? Maybe this was only relevant to rover v8s.
I'll have a look at that insulation material. If it's tried and tested this could be the answer although I thought a plate might improve the aesthetics as well.
