Swann thinks England can't win the WC he has a point about some of the odd selections that go on. Bopara has done well and isn't in the squad when he was at his worst he kept getting picked.Swann thought there are too many test players in the ODI squad. Vaughan thought the same and claimed it was the same when he was captain which begs the question why did it go on if it was known to be an issue. Vaughan was never much of a one day player , I remember watching him struggle v Bermuda in the WC . More interesting was the statistical way they approached games. Swann claimed that if England scored 239 or more they would win 72% of the time. They had set ideas how many should be scored at a certain time and this seemed to run the way the game was approached.
I have to agree with Swann's comments - I don't think that we are picking the right players or applying the right tactics to have a chance of winning a World Cup.
I think that England view a par score for a 50 over game as 270-280 and over the 43 years of ODI cricket that might be statistically a good score. However, T20 cricket has changed the way other countries play ODIs and we don't appear to have noticed. We need more players that can attack from the first ball to build an innings during the powerplay.
Having said that our record in ODIs is pretty good. As recently as 2 years ago we were ranked number 1 in the world. We are currently 5th but the table is very close and we are only 3 points behind India in 2nd. Over the course of a 5 match series we are OK. But I can't see us putting together the string of results that you need to win a World Cup.

I can't believe he lasted so long. Such a blatant chucker and everyone knew it.spikeyhead said:
Quel surprise. Yorkshire are closing in on their 32nd Championship 5 wickets tmw v Notts will do it. Nearly did it last year just ran out of steam the last couple of games. 9 of the 11 playing this game are from the academy all are eligible to play for England. The top 5 are pretty young eldest I think is 27. I'm told there are quite a few in the academy ready to step in the next year or two. It is a template for the other counties. Plenty of competition for places. Rafiq who I believe could have been Yorkshire captain is leaving , whoever he signs for has got a great player.
During some of Ajmal's deliveries he was extending the elbow in excess of 40 degrees. His average was 37 degrees and even his off break delivery was well in excess (more than double) of the allowed 15 degree limit. How did he get away with it for so long?

I think that there were some in the game who were unhappy with the process of reporting a player of suspected throwing and the validity of the analysis that was carried out. There was also some suspicion that players who were reported then deliberately bowled differently when being tested. The ICC has developed a new method for testing the degree that the arms bends during a match. This is more accurate as it is harder for a player to continue with a different style of bowling throughout a match. This seems to have given them more confidence and over the last year several players have been reported for throwing and banned.
As for Ajmal, the Pakistan Cricket Board have been a bit "sensitive" about allegations of rule-breaking in the past so perhaps the ICC waited until everyone was happy with the new style of reporting/investigating before taking action.

Indeed, but hardly surprising given the unwavering support he was given during the summer. Replacing him as ODI captain would upset the team and make defeat against SL and the Tri Series tournament even more likely. The real pity is that this is a needless burden on someone who is clearly one of the worlds best 5 day players, and may end up destroying that confidence. Sure, he's out of nick, but that's not a long term worry. Subjecting the guy to defeat after defeat, plus another WC humiliation when both he and England would be better off with him watching from the sofa and getting his long game batting form back seems short termist, belligerent and frankly mental.Gassing Station | Sports | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
