Cook has always been very cautious with his declarations but they still had 4 sessions and a bit and got a wicket in the bit of a session.

Thought the declaration was a bit late. A lower target would have given England more overs and the Windies a sniff of a win and therefore riskier batting.
I think we would probably be discussing a West Indies win in that scenario. Lower target = more time to be patient against a weak bowling attack. Even though the pitch was pretty tame, it still saw us at 30-3 and 20-2.

With Anderson and Broad both shadows of their former selves, I don't see anything to suggest we could bowl a good side out twice. Stuffings from New Zealand and Australia this summer and then off to South Africa. Apart from this tour against West Indies B, I doubt we'll get a sniff of winning a test match this year.

12 months of heavy defeats, ECCB/player arrogance and reading in the media about KP - not a thrillng prospect...

Good bowler when it is hooping miles on a green top. To be fair to him, he swings it both ways with great control. But he's never been one of the greats who can dig deep and win a match with an old ball on a dead track - very few can or could; but they are the greats. He's not really in the same league as Marshall, Holding, Lillee and the others.

Good achievement for an English player though. Be interesting to see how well he does in the Ashes.
Way off beam John, I was talking during his career not an all time list. For which I concur he is not quite there.

Your comment of " for an English player" is just the sort of ungracious comments chippy Aussies are so adored for.....

And incorrect. Witness Jimmy in Aus and the sub continent. Oh and the last time in the Windies. And his record against the greatest batsmen of his day. Is he Malko? Holding? Ambrose? Walsh? Glenda? Lillee? Pollock or Donald? No, he isn't, but then they are the greatest of all time. In another 18months and if he puts another 100 test wickets against his name then he can he can probably have a claim to be spoken of in that group. Jimmy and Steyn both!

On an English wicket though and as a swing bowler I said it 10yrs ago and I'll say it again now - he is the most naturally talented I've seen. That includes Beef and Hadlee. If they hadn't fked him around originally when he came into the England setup he would be well past 400 now and aiming for a career of 500 test wickets.

The bookies make the summer Ashes a very close call - there is a reason for that. Could be a cracker smile

One last try,

I was NOT suggesting Jimmy A is an all time great, such as Lillee or Marshall.

I said at times during his career he was the worlds best bowler AT THE TIME. i.e. in his career span, not all time.

Never the less he must surely now be England's best ever bowler, or are we still saving that title for Phil De Freitas or Gladstone Small ? wink

The BBC reckon it is Hoggard, based on the average of the batsman he dismissed, with Anderson second

Rain delays the start of the second test, but it's made the cherry swing. jimmy's already picked up his first victim in his second over.

That first over and first ball of his second over was proper top-quality test match bowling. You just don't see that level of skill in the short formats. I bloody love test matches.

Somebody call the bung brigade! Devon Smith didn't hit, was given out and he didn't bother reviewing. Curious!

And in the nets.

How do you motivate your team when playing in an omni-shambles of a slum?

Samuels going well with that bit of a break.

It's sad that I can't get excited about England playing the WIndies, especially in the Caribbean.

Dull pitch and too much rain, three dropped catches, Broad bowling an entire session where not one ball would have hit the stumps.
