Summer drive to Norway
Discussion
I am currently planning for a summer trip in the TVR to Norway, culminating in the Gatebil festival, just outside Oslo.
The current rough idea I have is:
-Ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland
-Amsterdam
-Hamburg
-Copenhagen
-Oslo
-Gatebil Car festival
-Larvic Ferry back down to Denmark
-Esbjerg ferry back to Harwich
This looks to be about 1500 miles and we have about a 2 week window to do it in, so plan on plenty of stops in-between. We will be mainly camping and from previous European drives we will not be booking a great deal apart from the ferries, so will have quite a bit of freedom with where we want to go and stay.
I have never been to Germany, Denmark, Sweden of Norway before though so wondered if any of you guys knew of any other places that would be worth visiting along the way, or have any tips for the journey?
We plan on leaving at the start of July and I need to be back for the 18th (my sisters wedding) so we have quite a bit of freedom. The convoy will be two TVRs (Chimaera and S3C)
Any tips on places to visit or things you would change?

Since we are currently finishing the plans for our Norway trip in June/July, you should consider this:
http://www.visitnorway.com/uk/where-to-go-uk/fjord...
It is rated as one of the Top10 roads to drive in your life. It is a detour for your planned journey, but a one worth it me thinks...
Oh, and when going through Germany, why not have a look at the Nürburgring. You may check opening times for tourist drives as well. Again a detour, but again more than worth it. You only live once...

Hi,@Getsis:
Kevin, how is live without the Tam. Car will be on a trip to Monaco with its current owner soon...
That will be the second time it's been to Monaco!!!
I miss it sometimes as it was a 40th birthday present to myself If the new owner ever wants to sell I would like first refusal! I will soon have a house the UK again so will need a new Toy for the UK.
I have other toys to keep me amused at the moment
Thanks everyone, and Getsis that would be great if you could send me through your route through Norway.
With regards to Sweden, would it be better going further inland and then cut across west to get to Norway?
That Atlantic road also looks like a great shout

The Atlantic road is the most overrated road I've ever been on. The elevation change is nothing like it seems in the pictures and you don't really see much while driving along the road either. It only looks good on pictures from certain angles. Oh and there's also a toll for driving on it...http://www.visitnorway.com/uk/where-to-go-uk/fjord...
The fjords are a bit of a detour and would need several more days.
This is the route I would advice you do through the southern part of Norway, stop at Flåm and camp one night and do the kayak to see the glacier and the Flåm railway, stop at Voss for the adventure stuff like whitewater rafting, canyoning paraglyding. Stay at Bergen for the City night life. Move on to stavannger and camp at Mosvatnet, Visit Mandal for food on the waterside then camp at Evje before visiting Kristainsand to get the ferry to Denmark. lots of other things to see along too. If you have time drive from Stavanger to Lysebotn, great mountain roads. If you like fishing take a rod as there are many great fishing spot along the way :-)
Only a couple of weeks to go, and the car is almost ready. Just got to give it a service and change a few bits I am not too happy with. Really looking forward to it
Thank Getsis for the map. Looking at the places you pointed out we will definitely try to get round them all. I doubt 2 weeks will be enough though as it looks like we will need at least 5 days in Norway.
I will take plenty of pictures on the way round and post them up when we get back

I have just returned from a 8 day trip to Norway. Fantastic places, roads and the people are very friendly. Take lots of spending money as it is very expensive, especially beer!!!. I recommend visiting Trollstigen (better than the Stelvio pass), all the tunnels are great and some are very long. You will thoroughly enjoy the Country.

Cheers, how did you get there, ferry to Denmark?
I have heard of the prices being pretty crazy. We are camping most of the way round so we will probably stock up on beer and wine in Germany to take in with us
Ferry to Esbjerg, drove through Denmark and ferry to Kristiansand. The Norwegians are courteous drivers pulling over to let you pass if they are driving slower and they always wave. Fantastic country (except the price of things) petrol dearer but not excessive. Roads are good. Weird it not getting dark at night!!.I have heard of the prices being pretty crazy. Good luck with your trip.
